“How dare you?” Olivia’s voice thundered back. Her eyes blazed as she pointed at Marina. “I should have known. I should have stopped this before it began. But I let you make your own choices, David. I trusted your judgment. And look where it’s brought us!”
She shook her head, her chest heaving. “Because of this woman, you’re losing your business. Do you hear me? Losing everything your father and I worked to build. And my poor Lily, my dear Lily. Because of the two of you, she has to suffer. She never deserved this.”
David’s hands balled into fists, but he kept his voice steady. “Mum… this is between us. Between me, Marina and Lily . You shouldn’t get involved. I told you before too...Marina has no fault.”
In his eyes, Marina was already innocent. Yes, she had her temper, yes, she acted without thinking, but he had never once doubted her heart.
Riyana’s heels clicked sharply as she stepped closer. “David, how dare you speak to Mum like this?”
He turned his head slowly, eyes narrowing. “Riyana, I’m your big brother. Don’t forget that.” His voice carried authority now, the tone he rarely used with her.
But then his expression shifted, a flicker of disbelief crossing his face. “And when did you come back from London?”
Riyana’s lips twisted. “Now you remember your sister?” Her words dripped with sarcasm. “I came back because you are ruining our family reputation. Do you understand? Ruining it. Everywhere people whisper about you, about her. And I will not stand by and watch.”
She stepped closer until her face was only inches from his. “I’ll never forget what you did to Lily. Never. And I will never accept this woman as my sister-in-law. Keep that in mind.”
Her gaze cut sharply to Marina, slicing like a knife. “This ends soon, Marina. One way or another.”
David’s body moved before Marina could even flinch. He planted himself firmly in front of her, shielding her with his broad frame. His eyes blazed. “Don’t you dare threaten her.”
Riyana’s nostrils flared. “Enough! Now you’re threatening your own sister for this woman? How much shame will you bring on us?”
Beside her, Olivia’s composure cracked, her voice trembling as tears welled up. “David, is this what you’ve become? Turning against your family for her? How much more pain will you cause me?”
David’s expression softened, though anger still stormed behind his eyes. He looked at her, truly looked at her and his chest tightened.
“It’s okay,” he murmured, slipping his arm around her and pulling her against him. “It’s not your fault.”
He rested his chin on the top of her head for a moment, his eyes closed. He knew his feelings for Marina had shifted. She wasn’t just the reckless girl he remembered anymore. She was something else, complicated, flawed, but fragile in a way he couldn’t ignore.
He never wanted her to suffer because of him.
Lily had been at peace these past few days. For the first time in so long, her heart didn’t feel heavy. She kept seeing David and Marina’s news splashed all over social media, pictures of them at dinners, Marina’s bright smile plastered across headlines, even rumors about their upcoming wedding. But strangely, it didn’t hurt anymore. Maybe she had finally reached that point where nothing about him or Marina could shake her.
Today was different. Today was special. It was Noah’s birthday, and Lily had promised herself she would make it perfect. She had already bought a beautiful new dress for Noah.
