Lily lowered her eyes, fiddling with her fingers nervously. She could sense truth in his words, but she couldn’t shake the uneasiness in her chest. She still wasn’t sure who the real Carson Bennett was, the teasing, spoiled man from earlier, or this calm, understanding one sitting across from her now.
Just then Carson’s mobile began to vibrate on the sofa. He glanced down at the Caller ID and stood up.
“I have to take this,” he said smoothly, his tone back to that calm maturity that kept throwing Lily off guard. Before walking away, he looked at her again. “You can rest. And don’t worry about staying here. If you leave after I come, I’ll feel bad, so just stay here. I won’t be home much, even if I stay around. So relax.”
He gave a little wave of his hand, almost dismissive but not rude, and added, “This house is too big to stay alone, and it’ll be worse to leave it empty like this. So just chill.”
With that, Carson turned and walked toward the stairs. Lily sat frozen on the sofa, her eyes following his tall, confident figure as he moved up step by step until he disappeared from her sight.
Her lips parted, but no words came out. Her mind was spinning.
What is this man? she thought, shock written across her face. She couldn’t pin him down, spoiled, arrogant, teasing one second, then calm, mature, and strangely considerate the next. It was like he had too many sides, and she didn’t know which one was the real Carson Bennett.
Lily leaned back, her heart still unsteady, whispering to herself, “He’s… impossible to understand.”
When Lily finally went back to her room, her phone lit up with a call. Claire’s name flashed on the screen. She quickly answered, “Hello, Claire.”
“Lily,” Claire’s calm voice came through. “Don’t stress yourself. You don’t need to leave the house. You can stay if you want. My brother, he won’t be around for long anyway. He never stays in the country. If he’s here, it’s only for some work.”
Lily sat down on the bed, clutching the phone. Just hearing Claire’s words made her shoulders loosen a little. “Thank you, Claire. I was… really worried. He seemed upset when he saw me here. I thought I should start looking for an apartment right away.”
Claire gave a small laugh, soft but tired. “Don’t bother about him. Carson likes to play around, but he isn’t a bad person. He just… talks too much sometimes. Don’t take his words seriously.”
Lily smiled faintly, though the tension in her chest didn’t completely leave. “Still, thank you for letting me stay. I’ll try not to trouble anyone.”
Just then, she heard footsteps from upstairs.
Her heart gave a small jump.
He’s awake.
“Wow,” Carson stopped at the end of the table, his eyes widening at the sight. A full breakfast, omelets, toast, fresh fruit, pancakes, juice, and steaming coffee. For a moment, he just stood there, looking almost boyish in his surprise.
“You made this all yourself? Seriously?” His voice carried a mix of disbelief and amusement.
Lily, standing near the table with the coffee pot in her hand, nodded shyly. “Yes… I wasn’t sure what you’d like, but I just made what I could. Please, have some.” She gently placed the cup of coffee in front of him.
