My Husband's Affair My Anniversary Gift (Lily and David) novel Chapter 129

The elevator doors slid open with a soft ding. Lily stepped out.

Just as she turned the corner toward her office, her assistant, Mia, came rushing up to her with a nervous expression.

“Ms. Lily,” Mia said, slightly breathless. “There’s a VVIP client waiting in your office.”

Lily frowned. “VVIP? Today? Are you sure?”

Mia nodded quickly. “Yes. She came without an appointment, but… she insisted. I couldn’t stop her.”

Lily slowed her steps. She checked her phone once, flipping through her calendar. There was nothing, no meeting, no hint of such a client. Her brows drew tighter. “Who is it?”

Mia hesitated. “She didn’t say her name. But… she looks… important.”

Lily sighed. Whoever it was, barging into her office without an appointment already said a lot. Her chest tightened as unease crawled through her veins. She squared her shoulders and pushed open the door.

The moment her eyes landed on the woman sitting so comfortably in her chair, her entire body stiffened.

Marina.

Her legs froze in place, her throat closing for a second.

Marina was sitting with one leg crossed over the other, her back straight, and her lips curved into that smug smile Lily hated so much. She looked like she owned the room, her designer dress hugging her body perfectly, diamonds sparkling from her ears. She looked every bit the arrogant, spoiled woman she was.

Lily clenched the file tighter in her hand, her nails digging into the edge. “What are you doing here?”

Marina tilted her head, her smile widening as if she had been waiting to see Lily’s reaction. “Oh, Lily… is this how you welcome your clients? No wonder people say Aurora’s assistant is cold.”

Lily’s lips pressed together. She walked slowly into the room, setting the bag on her desk. “I asked you a question, Marina. What are you doing here?”

Marina leaned back in the chair, her eyes glinting. “I came for business, of course. What else? I want Aurora to design jewelry for my wedding.”

The words felt like a punch to Lily’s stomach. Her hands curled into fists at her side. She could almost hear her heartbeat pounding in her ears.

Lily’s eyes narrowed. “What personal reasons?”

Marina’s lips curved cruelly. “Oh, please. Don’t act innocent. You’re rejecting me because I’m marrying David, right? Because it bothers you that I’ll be his wife, and you won’t be.”

The blood rushed to Lily’s face. She wanted to slam her fists on the desk, wanted to scream at Marina, wanted to wipe that smirk off her face.

But she didn’t.

She lifted her chin instead, her voice steady though her chest was burning. “Marina, don’t flatter yourself. I couldn’t care less about your marriage. David’s choices are David’s business, not mine. And I have no reason to get involved in them anymore.”

Marina’s smirk widened. “Really? Then why are your fists so tight? Why do you look like you’re about to explode?”

Lily unclenched her hands slowly, her nails leaving little crescent marks in her palm. She took a deep breath. “Because your arrogance is tiring. Not because of David.”

Marina leaned closer, lowering her voice as if to stab her words directly into Lily’s chest. “Don’t pretend, Lily. Everyone knows you’re bitter. You left David, but now you can’t stand to see him with me. That’s why you’re rejecting my request. You can’t stand to see me happy.”
