My Husband's Affair My Anniversary Gift (Lily and David) novel Chapter 133

“You want me to get out of this car right now?”

Lily’s voice was sharp, her words almost cutting the air between them. She had already told him in the morning she didn’t want anything between them, not relationship, not drama, nothing. Yesterday she had been a little swayed, maybe a little shaken by Carson’s careless, flirtatious charm but today her mind was clear again. She didn’t want to mess her life further. She needed peace, not confusion.

Carson’s hand on the steering wheel tightened. He turned his eyes toward her quickly, the sharpness in his gaze making Lily’s heart skip, but the moment he saw the seriousness, the anger, and the almost tired look on her face, his eyes softened.

“I’m sorry,” he said after a pause.

His voice wasn’t heavy, but quiet, almost unsure. It was the first time she had heard him like that.

Lily turned her face away, looking out the window. The city lights flashed past, but she couldn’t focus on them. Her chest felt tight. She suddenly realized being close to Carson, letting herself get even a little swayed by his personality, was going to create nothing but a mess in her life. She didn’t want Carson. She didn’t want Jabco either. She didn’t want anyone. She had enough with David.

What she needed right now was stability. Just work, peace, and her own life.

The car was silent for a long moment. Only the hum of the engine filled the space.

Then Carson cleared his throat. He changed the subject. “How was your day?”

Lily blinked. She turned her eyes to him, almost surprised.

Carson looked straight ahead, pretending to focus only on the road. His voice was casual, like nothing had happened, like she hadn’t just threatened to leave the car.

“It was… normal,” Lily finally answered, her voice flat at first. She adjusted herself in the seat, loosened her shoulders slightly. “Bit of work, a lot of drafts, same as usual.”

Carson nodded. “ new design?”

“Yeah.” Lily pressed her lips together, then sighed. “It’s almost ready. I’m just making sure it’s… perfect.”

Carson gave her a small smile, the kind of smile that made him look boyish. “Of course. You’re always like that. You don’t let go until it’s perfect.”

Lily frowned a little. “And you know that… how?”

Carson shrugged lightly. “I notice things and so my sister has told all lots of about you. And You think I don’t?”

Lily rolled her eyes but didn’t reply. She looked out the window again, but her body wasn’t as stiff as before. The heavy tension that had filled the car when she threatened to leave was slowly easing away.

Carson went on, his voice casual. “I was thinking today… maybe you should take a break once in a while. You always work too much.”

Lily almost laughed. “Says the man who doesn’t work at all?” As much as she got information about him, he was completely out of work person.

Carson grinned, tilting his head toward her for just a second before focusing back on the road. “Exactly. That’s why I’m the expert in resting.”

“Yes, it is,” Carson teased, his tone light.

Lily shook her head. “You’re impossible.”

“And you’re difficult,” Carson shot back quickly.

That made Lily glare at him, but Carson just laughed. The sound filled the car, easy and warm. For a second, Lily almost forgot her frustration.

When they reached the restaurant, Carson parked the car smoothly and got out first. He walked around and opened the door for her. Lily raised her eyebrows.

“What?” Carson asked, pretending innocence.

“You don’t need to be gentleman,” Lily said, stepping out.

Carson smirked. “Maybe I’m trying to impress you.”

Lily rolled her eyes. “Stop trying. It won’t work.”

But Carson only grinned wider, leading her inside.
