My Husband's Affair My Anniversary Gift (Lily and David) novel Chapter 148

After dinner, Lily quietly washed the dishes, the sound of running water filling the silence. When she turned off the tap and wiped her hands, she could still feel his presence behind her, the steady weight of his gaze.

She walked toward her room, trying to ignore it, but the faint sound of footsteps followed. She stopped abruptly, anger rising in her chest. Her fists tightened, and her teeth ground together. This man… he’s really shameless.

She turned, glaring at him. “Leave now. Your lover must be waiting for you. I need to sleep.”

David didn’t even flinch. “No one’s waiting for me,” he said quietly. “And I don’t want to be alone tonight.”

Lily let out a sharp breath and turned away. “Not my problem.” She walked into her room and slammed the door, twisting the lock firmly. She didn’t trust him not anymore.

“Lily,” he called from outside, knocking once. “Are you really going to let me sleep out here?”

She ignored him and went straight to the bathroom. The warm shower helped wash away some of her anger, and by the time she came out, she couldn’t hear any sound from the other side of the door. The apartment was silent.

He must have left, she thought. Why would he even stay here? She shook her head and crawled into bed, too tired to think anymore.

But outside, David hadn’t left.

He lay stretched across the small sofa, one arm over his eyes, the faint city light cutting across his face. He didn’t understand himself anymore, why he came here, why he couldn’t just go home. Ever since Lily left, the house had felt too quiet, too cold. Even with Marina beside him, there was something hollow inside him that never went away.

Tonight, he didn’t want to return to that emptiness. The sofa was narrow and uncomfortable, but the faint smell of Lily’s cooking still lingered in the air, and for some reason, that was enough. His body relaxed, and for the first time in days, sleep found him easily.

Hours later, in the middle of the night, Lily woke up. Her throat was dry. She slipped out of bed and padded barefoot toward the kitchen, her hair still damp from her shower.

But the moment she stepped into the living room, she froze.

David was there, asleep on the sofa, one arm hanging loosely, his breathing deep and steady. The faint moonlight from the window touched his face, softening the harshness that usually lived in his features.

Lily’s anger flared instantly. What the hell is he doing here? she thought. She walked closer, ready to wake him up and send him out. But when she stopped beside him, her hand hovering near his shoulder, something made her pause.

He looked… cold. His brows were slightly furrowed even in sleep, his lips pale. There was no blanket, just his jacket half slipping off.

For a long moment, Lily stood there, her heart tight and conflicted. Then she sighed softly, almost annoyed at herself. She turned and went back into her room, grabbed a small blanket, and came out again.

She quietly bent down and placed it over him, careful not to wake him.

For a second, she just stood there, looking at him, the man who had once been her everything, and now only a stranger she wished she could forget. Her eyes softened despite herself.

“Idiot, shameless bastard " she whispered under her breath. Then she turned around and went back to her room, closing the door gently this time.

Outside, David shifted slightly under the blanket, as if he’d felt her near. A faint, almost peaceful smile touched his lips in his sleep, something that hadn’t happened in a long, long time.

The next morning, when Lily woke up and came out, David was already gone.

The elevator doors opened, and Lily stepped out, her heels clicking against the marble floor as she walked.

She didn’t notice the black car parked right near the entrance or the man stepping out of it, his eyes following her every move.

“Happy birthday to you, Mr. Grey,” Lily said with a small smile. “But don’t you think it’s strange? It’s your birthday, yet you’re inviting me to dinner. Aren’t you afraid of becoming tomorrow’s trending topic? Mr. Grey celebrates his birthday with a low-level employee?”

Her tone was playful, but her words carried a hint of truth.

Jabco chuckled. “If I cared about trending news, I wouldn’t be standing here today, inviting you to dinner.”

The corner of Lily’s lips curved slightly. “So... are you asking me out on a dinner date, Mr. Grey?” she blurted before she could stop herself.

And then she froze.

Her steps halted when she saw him standing there, just a few feet away. David.

His expression darkened instantly the moment he heard her words.

“Alright, Mr. Grey, I’ll see you later,” Lily said quickly, cutting the call and lowering her phone, her heart pounding in her chest.
