Lily frowned. What happened to him? she wondered silently. Did he even eat properly? Or sleep?
But as soon as that thought crossed her mind, she shook her head angrily. “No,” she whispered to herself. “Why am I even thinking about this?”
She looked away, her heart pounding with irritation. Whatever happens to him, it’s none of my business. He could fall apart, disappear, or go straight to hell, it has nothing to do with me anymore.
She stood up, her voice sharp and cold when she finally spoke. “After you finish, leave the plate and go. I don’t want to see your face again.”
David froze mid-motion, the spoon halfway to his mouth. For a long moment, he just sat there, silent, staring at the food. His hand trembled slightly before he finally put the bite into his mouth again.
Lily didn’t wait for a reply. She turned around and walked straight to her room, her footsteps quick and firm. She didn’t look back once.
The sound of the bedroom door closing echoed through the quiet apartment.
David sat there in the silence, staring at the half-empty plate. His chest tightened painfully. He pressed his lips together, swallowed hard, and lowered his gaze.
He had promised himself he wouldn’t come. He had promised he’d let her go, that he wouldn’t make things harder for her anymore. But every night since she left, her face haunted him. The way she smiled, the way she glared, even the way she called his name when she was angry everything.
He hadn’t been able to sleep. Food tasted like nothing. Every place reminded him of her.
He rubbed his forehead, exhaling shakily. “I told myself I wouldn’t come,” he muttered under his breath, “but… I can’t.”
He looked toward the closed bedroom door, his eyes softening.
Every day, every night, I can’t stop thinking about you, Lily.
He picked up another spoonful of rice, eating quietly. He didn’t care that she hated him. He didn’t care how angry she was.
He just couldn’t stay away.
Even if she throws me out tomorrow, he thought, I won’t leave her again.
Lily lay on the bed, fuming. Her whole body felt tense, her thoughts spinning in frustration.
“Unbelievable,” she muttered under her breath, glaring at the ceiling. “He shows up drunk, eats my food, and acts like nothing happened…”
She turned on her side and yanked the blanket over her head, hoping to block out the world and forget the chaos he brought with him. But no matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t calm down. Her heart was racing, her mind restless.
After a while, when the room had fallen silent, she felt the mattress dip slightly behind her.
