“You’re wrong about that,” David said, stepping closer to her. His voice was low, heavy. He had been shocked that day, after all, that child was his, even if he never meant to be with Marina. The child was still his, even if it happened by accident.
“I never gave your place in my life to Marina,” he added quietly.
Lily let out a sharp, bitter laugh. “Who are you trying to fool, David? Don’t you remember what you told me that morning after we first slept together? You said I was just a placeholder in your life. And when she came back, you told me to leave. You said you didn’t need me anymore because she was back, didn’t you?” Her voice rose with every word, her anger spilling out.
Today, she was done holding it in. Today, she wanted him to see what he had done to her, how much pain he had caused. She knew he wasn’t the kind of man who easily understood someone else’s feelings, but she would make him feel it today.
“No, I didn’t tell you to leave,” David said, his tone unsteady. “I told you to stay at home. It was you who left. When I came back, the house was empty. Even when Marina returned, I had no intention of going back to her. I was just…” He stopped. The words caught in his throat.
Because she was right, she was holding up a mirror to everything he had done over the past five years. And deep down, he knew it. He remembered exactly what he had said to her that first time. But he had been scared back then, scared of what he was feeling. From the very beginning, there had been something about her that drew him in, something that made him lose control. He didn’t know how to deal with it, so he built walls instead.
But it wasn’t true that he never cared about her. She had always been at the center of his attention, all these nine years. If she hadn’t been, he wouldn’t have kept her so close as his secretary, by his side every day. When she first joined the office, she had no experience at all, not even close to what that position required. Usually, people worked for years, pouring their effort and time just to earn that post. But he had given it to her anyway.
He just never knew how to show affection. He knew she loved him, she never hid it. She wore her feelings so openly, and he took it for granted. He thought she would always be there, no matter how cold or distant he was.
But she left.
