After they finished eating, they walked out of the restaurant. The night air felt cooler than she expected, or maybe it was just her nerves settling in her chest.
“Mr. Hardison, thank you for dinner. My car is here,” Lily said as she spotted the black sedan pulling into the parking area. She tried to keep her tone light, polite, distant.
David stepped forward and glanced at the car, then blocked her path as if the conversation was already over.
“No. Get in my car. I’ll drive you.”
His tone was calm, almost quiet, but Lily recognized the heaviness underneath. This wasn’t a suggestion. This was him drawing a line.
Her first instinct was to refuse. She opened her mouth, ready to say she could manage, ready to tell him they didn’t need to travel together.
But Danish was standing right beside her, holding her hand with his small fingers. She couldn’t start an argument here. Not in front of her son. Not when she had no idea where David’s emotions were right now.
So she closed her mouth.
Her chest tightened a little.
“All right,” she said in a steady voice.
She placed her hand on Danish’s back, guiding him gently. Danish didn’t notice the tension. He was happily looking around the parking lot, humming a small tune under his breath. He had always been able to sense her sadness, but tonight he was too occupied with everything being new.
David didn’t say another word. He simply walked ahead, opened the back door for Danish, waited for him to climb in, then moved to the other door for Lily. His movements were controlled, too controlled.
Lily lowered her eyes and slid into the seat.
She could feel it now.
He was holding something back.
And she didn’t know how long that calmness would last.
David got into the car right after Lily. He closed the door quietly, then leaned back in his seat. He didn’t look at her. He didn’t look at Danish. He just stared straight ahead, his expression unreadable.
The car started moving.
The silence that fell inside was the same heavy silence again.
She tried not to let it bother her, but her chest tightened on its own.
Lily finally turned toward Danish when she noticed him rubbing his eyes with the back of his small hand.
“Are you sleepy?” she asked softly, brushing his hair away from his forehead.
Danish nodded, his voice small.
“Yes, Mum.”
Lily’s expression softened. She cupped his cheek and looked at him as if the world outside the car didn’t exist. He looked exhausted. He had been excited since morning, following her everywhere for the show, meeting new people, seeing the bright lights. It was a lot for him.
“All right. Sleep,” she whispered. She slid her arm around him and gently pulled him into her embrace. Danish didn’t resist. He curled against her stomach like he always did when he was younger, closing his eyes and letting out a small breath.
Lily held him close, her hand running up and down his back.
David still didn’t look their way.
But his fingers…
His fingers had curled into a fist on his lap, knuckles turning white.
He could hear Danish’s soft breathing.
He could hear Lily’s quiet humming as she tried to help the boy sleep.
He could feel something shifting inside him, something he didn’t want to show.
He kept staring out the window.
Lily looked down at her son, unaware of David’s reaction. Danish was already half-asleep. She kissed the top of his head lightly and whispered, “Good boy.”
The car lights passed across David’s face. He blinked once, slowly, but still didn’t speak.
Silence wrapped around all three of them again. This time, it wasn’t empty. It wasn’t cold either. It was something strange, something heavy, something that made Lily swallow hard and pull her son closer as if she needed the comfort as much as he did.
David pressed his palm against his knee, trying to steady the breath that suddenly felt uneven.
“Horizon Building,” Lily said quietly as she gave her address to the driver.
The driver nodded through the mirror and turned the wheel.
The car moved smoothly through the evening traffic, but inside the car the silence felt thick again. Danish slept in Lily’s arms, breathing softly. Lily kept her hand on his back, patting him gently.
