Lily took a deep breath, steadying herself. “If you want to make things right, you earn it. You don’t get it just because you said sorry.”
David’s whole body stiffened. His heart almost dropped.
“Lily…?” he breathed out, like he was scared of the answer.
“Yes.” Her voice didn’t shake anymore. “You don’t get to ask me to come back. Not after everything you did.”
David’s fingers pressed harder into his lap. His voice came out rough and thin. “You want me to kneel… the whole night? Is that what you’re asking?”
Lily paused. A tiny second. Because deep inside, very deep, there was still that girl who once loved him more than anything. But she shut that feeling down before it could grow.
“You can really do that?” she asked, almost testing him.
David dropped his head again. His shoulders sank, like the weight of the whole world was on him. “Of course. I’ll do anything for you, Lily. Anything.”
Lily just stared at him, not believing it for a moment. She took a small step back.
“Stand up,” she told him quietly. “Stop kneeling. It won’t change anything.”
But David didn’t move. Not even a twitch.
“Lily…” he whispered, and there was begging in his voice.
She looked away from him because she couldn’t stand that look in his eyes. “It’s late. You should go.”
He flinched like the words cut him.
“No,” he said softly. “I’ll stay like this.”
Lily threw her hands up. “You do whatever you want. I don’t care.” Her voice was full of frustration. “Just… don’t expect me to watch you.”
She stormed into the bathroom and shut the door harder than she meant to. Leaning against the cold tiles, she rubbed her face.
“Idiot,” she muttered,.she didn’t even know if she meant him or herself.
She rushed through her shower, trying to calm her thoughts, but they kept jumping everywhere. When she came back out, steam followed her into the room.
David was still there. Still kneeling. Still watching her with tired eyes.
Lily groaned under her breath. “If you’re done with your drama, go home,” she said. “I don’t want to deal with you anymore tonight.”
She didn’t wait for an answer. She walked to the bed, climbed in, pulled the blanket over her head, turned off the lights, and shut her eyes tight.
David didn’t move. Not a sound. Just stayed there on the floor like a shadow.
Lily tossed to her side. Then the other. Her heart kept pounding.
“How am I supposed to sleep with you doing this?” she muttered from under the blanket. But she didn’t say it loud enough for him to hear.
Minutes passed. Maybe hours. She wasn’t sure. But she couldn’t fall asleep at all.
Every time she closed her eyes, she kept seeing him kneeling there, like some broken man who didn’t know where else to go.
