Jabco’s expression slowly hardened. Something dark passed through his eyes, but he didn’t say anything. He simply lowered his head, as if swallowing all the words he wanted to speak.
He turned around.
Before walking out, his eyes landed on Cristo. The look was brief, sharp, and clear.
Cristo nodded immediately. He understood without a word.
Jabco walked toward the door.
Riyana stood there, watching his back as he left. She knew him too well. He wasn’t the kind of man who listened easily, especially not when it came to her. He would say he was leaving, but she was sure he would come back tomorrow anyway.
The thought alone made her chest tighten with frustration.
“Riyana…”
Just as she turned around, that voice froze her in place.
She slowly looked up.
Rose was standing at the doorway, a small suitcase beside her. Her eyes moved from Riyana’s face to the living room, clearly sensing the tension in the air.
“Rose?” Riyana said, surprised. “I thought you were coming back after two days.”
“That was the plan,” Rose replied, stepping inside. “But it got canceled, so I came early.” She paused, then frowned slightly. “But what are you doing here?”
Her eyes suddenly lit up with curiosity.
“And wasn’t that your boss, Jabco Grey, outside?” she added casually. “I saw him getting into his car.”
She dragged her suitcase inside and left it near the door.
Rose was twenty, a university student, still young and careless in many ways. She was Riyana’s stepfather’s daughter from his first wife. After his wife passed away, he married Riyana’s mother. Their relationship was normal, not too close, not too distant.
But there was one thing Riyana always felt uncomfortable about.
Rose liked Jabco.
She had met him once when she was fifteen. After that, she became a complete fan. A long, obvious crush that never faded. Every time Riyana visited her mother, Rose would always ask about Jabco.
“Did he come to drop you?” Rose asked again, smiling.
Riyana’s patience snapped.
“That’s none of your business,” she said sharply. “He’s much older than you. I’ve told you before, stop running after him.”
Rose rolled her eyes, completely unconcerned.
“Age doesn’t matter with a man like him,” she said lightly. “And I already told you, one day I’ll make him mine.”
She laughed, like it was a joke. Like it was a challenge.
Riyana’s expression hardened, but she stayed silent. She didn’t respond. She didn’t want to waste her energy on this.
“Where are Mum and Dad?” Rose suddenly asked, her tone changing.
Riyana froze.
She knew she couldn’t hide it now.
“Dad got into an accident,” she said carefully. “He’s in the hospital. Mum is with him.”
Rose’s face went pale.
“What?” Her voice shook. “What are you saying? Why didn’t anyone inform me?”
Fear rushed into her eyes.
“Which hospital? How is he? Is it serious?” she asked one question after another, panic rising fast.
“Rose,” Riyana said firmly, grabbing her shoulders and making her look straight at her. “He’s out of danger now. Calm down.”
She softened her tone slightly.
“I just came back after seeing him. You can go to him.”
Rose couldn’t stay still anymore.
“I’ll go right now,” she said, already turning toward the door.
“Cristo,” Riyana called out immediately. “Take her to the hospital.”
Cristo looked at Riyana, hesitation clear on his face.
“Mrs...”
Before he could finish, Riyana snapped.
