David’s face darkened. He sneered, his voice dripping with mockery.
“Lily isn’t the type to fall for a spoiled playboy like you.”
But to his shock, Lily slipped her arm through Jacob’s and smiled faintly.
“Is that so?” she said coolly. David froze for a moment.
“Lily,” he said through gritted teeth, voice low but charged with authority. “Don’t. Don’t you dare encourage him. You’re mine. Do you understand?”
Lily’s smile remained, calm and controlled. “Oh? You mean because of that piece of paper we signed?”
She said lightly, letting the jab linger in the air. “You know, David… it doesn’t actually mean you get to dictate everything I do. And don't forget you have Marina now"
David’s nostrils flared, a sharp exhale escaping him. “You can play games all you want, but don’t think for a second that I won’t stop this. You are my wife, and don’t you forget it.”
Jacob, finally catching onto the tension, raised his hands slightly in a gesture of peace. “I don’t mean to disrespect you, Hardison. I just—Lily, I like her. That’s all. I don’t intend to cross a line, but I also don’t step back when something matters.”
David’s glare didn’t soften. “Step back? I don’t think you understand what that means. She’s off-limits. Do you hear me? She’s mine.”
Lily felt a rush of conflicting emotions. She didn’t want Jacob—she really didn’t—but she also didn’t want to deal with David’s possessiveness right now. She could feel herself caught in the middle, and the tension, so thick it almost hurt, made her pulse race.
This is insane, she thought. He’s acting like we’re still… like I’m not allowed to exist without his approval. But I can’t deal with him storming around here like a jealous fool. Not in front of Jacob, not here, not now.
She took a breath, calming herself just enough to project an air of indifference, though her chest still thumped fiercely.
“David,” she said, voice even but firm, “I’m here for work. Nothing more. You don’t get to control me, and you don’t get to make me choose sides in your anger. So if you want to keep this civil, you’ll let it go. Otherwise, we’re wasting everyone’s time.”
David froze, stunned—not by her words, but by the tone. There was no fear, no pleading, no hesitation. Just a calm, controlled assertion of her will.
