The silence stretched, thick with tension.
David’s jaw tightened, his voice dropping low, almost dangerous. “You’ll regret this, Lily.”
Her hand pressed against the door, her chin lifted. “No. The only regret I have is ever giving my heart to you.”
Her words cut deeper than a knife. His eyes darkened, fury and hurt colliding in them, but he couldn’t form a reply.
Lily pushed the door again, forcing him to move back. This time, he didn’t stop her. She stepped inside and shut it firmly, the sound echoing in the hall.
On the other side, David stood still. His fists trembled, his eyes burning red, his chest heaving with unspoken rage.
Inside, Lily pressed her back against the door, tears finally slipping down her cheeks. Her hands clenched, her heart heavy, but her resolve was strong. She would not go back. Not this time.
Outside, David’s figure remained by her door, unmoving, like a shadow that refused to leave.
The night deepened around them, both hearts bleeding, both stubborn, both unwilling to bend.
The next morning, Lily was still lying in bed, staring at the ceiling when her phone buzzed. She turned slowly, not expecting anyone to call this early, but when she saw the name flashing on the screen, her eyes widened a little—Olivia.
Her heart gave a small jolt. But after a few rings, Lily pressed answer.
“Hello…?” her voice was soft.
“Lily?” Olivia’s voice came faint through the receiver, weak but still warm. “It’s me. I hope I didn’t wake you.”
“No, no… mum, I was already up,” Lily said quickly, sitting up now. “Are you… are you okay?”
There was a short pause before Olivia answered. “I’m at the hospital. They said I should stay for some more observation. I just… I wanted to hear your voice.”
Something in Lily’s chest tightened. She pressed her lips together, fighting back the sting in her eyes. “I’ll come right away,” she whispered.
“You don’t have to trouble yourself, dear,” Olivia tried to say, but her voice trembled, betraying her weakness.
“I’m coming,” Lily said firmly this time. “Wait for me, okay?”
She ended the call before Olivia could object.
By the time Lily reached the hospital, the sun had barely climbed above the skyline. She carried a small bag with some fruit and a thermos of warm porridge she had prepare in a rush. The smell of disinfectant hit her nose as soon as she entered the hospital lobby, and her chest felt heavier with every step toward Olivia’s room.
When she pushed the door open, she saw Olivia lying in bed, propped up with two pillows. She looked pale, her once-bright face dimmed, but when her eyes landed on Lily, they softened instantly.
"Mum"
“You came,” Olivia murmured, a smile tugging faintly at her lips.
Lily’s chest ached at the older woman’s words, but she shook her head. “I can’t live my life begging for love, Mum. David doesn’t want me. He made that clear many times. Even if I forgive him, what then? He will still run to Marina whenever she calls. That’s not a life.”
Olivia’s eyes filled with tears. She gripped Lily’s hand tighter. “Then at least… be kind to him. Don’t be too hard. He’s a fool, but he’s still my son. Promise me you won’t hate him completely.”
Before Lily could answer, the door opened. David walked in. His tall frame filled the room, his usual confident aura slightly dimmed by the situation. He looked at Lily first, his eyes flickering with complicated emotions, before shifting to his mother.
“Mother,” he said quietly, walking to her side.
Olivia’s face hardened the moment she saw him. “You fool"
David lowered his head.
“Mother...”
“Don’t ‘Mother’ me!” Olivia cut him off, her weak voice suddenly filled with strength. “How dare you treat Lily like this? She came here, fed me, cared for me, while you, what have you given her? Pain! Humiliation! If you think I’ll allow Marina into this family, you’re wrong. Never. I’ll never accept her. The only daughter-in-law I recognize is Lily.”
David clenched his fists. His lips parted as if to argue, but nothing came out.
Lily sat silently, watching the scene unfold. She knew, deep inside, that David was only here because of his mother. He needed Olivia to speak well of him, especially now that rumors of their divorce were spreading and his company’s reputation was in danger. If Olivia stood firmly on Lily’s side, it would weaken him further.
Her heart felt heavy. She knew David was using his mother’s love to buy time, to rebuild his public image. But that didn’t matter to Olivia, who truly wanted them to reconcile.
