“Just get out of here, I don’t want to see your face,” Lily said sharply, turning her back to him and walking straight to her room.
“Whose face do you want to see then? Carson’s? Jacob’s? Or maybe Evan’s?” David’s voice boomed behind her, filled with anger and jealousy.
Lily’s hands curled into tight fists at her sides, her teeth grinding together. She wanted to shout back, but she didn’t. She didn’t want to waste her energy fighting with him anymore. She kept walking, her head held high, and went straight to the bathroom.
She needed a shower—cold water. Maybe that would calm her down, help her clear her head. She had too many things to think about, too many things to handle tomorrow. She couldn’t let David’s shouting ruin her focus.
Her mind felt blank as she stepped into the bathroom. She stripped off her clothes one piece at a time, her movements slow, heavy with exhaustion. She turned the shower on and stepped under it, letting the water run over her head, down her back, soaking her completely. She closed her eyes, breathing deeply, trying to wash away the tension sitting heavy in her chest.
Then she heard it.
A soft click of the door opening.
Lily’s eyes flew open. She turned quickly, water dripping down her face, and froze in shock.
David stood there, leaning casually against the door frame, already pulling at his shirt.
“What the hell are you doing?!” she shouted, backing up a step and trying to cover herself, though she had no idea what part of her body to hide first.
“Get out!” she yelled, anger flaring.
But he only smiled, that proud, teasing smile that made her blood boil.
“Let’s take a shower together,” he said casually. “I’ve been in the hospital all day. I feel disgusting.”
Lily’s jaw dropped. She hadn’t thought he’d actually come in. She thought he’d stay outside the door or maybe leave. But he was already in here, and in just a moment, his clothes were on the floor, and he stood completely bare in front of her.
Her breath caught in her throat.
They had been married for years. They’d seen each other countless times like this, skin to skin, without shame. But now, after everything that had happened, seeing his body again, strong and well-built, made her heart beat erratically against her ribs. Her face grew hot despite the cold water pouring over her.
“Fine, I’ll leave,” she muttered in a weak voice, tearing her gaze away. She turned, walking past him, but before she could take another step, strong arms wrapped around her waist.
Her feet left the ground.
“David!” she cried, struggling as he lifted her effortlessly. Her body pressed against his warm, solid chest, water dripping from her skin onto his. “Don’t try to play with me! Put me down! I’m not doing this with you!”
He bit down on her lower lip suddenly, not hard enough to injure, but enough to make her gasp at the sting. That was all he needed. The moment she parted her lips in surprise, his tongue slid in, deep and demanding.
Lily gasped again, but this time it was muffled as he took control of the kiss, his tongue tangling with hers, exploring her mouth like he owned it. Their breaths mixed together, hot against the cold water running down their faces.
She struggled, hitting his shoulders with her fists, but his hold only tightened, his warmth enveloping her completely.
“Mm… mmph…” Her protest turned into weak sounds as her strength faded.
The kiss was overwhelming, his presence overpowering. The scent of him, even under the sharp smell of soap and water, filled her head. The feel of his strong body pressed against hers, his arms around her waist holding her like she was something precious—something he refused to let go of—shook her to her core.
Her body betrayed her again, her hands moving from pushing him away to clutching at his broad shoulders, fingers digging into his skin. She was exhausted, trembling, caught between anger and something else she didn’t want to name.
David kissed her like a man starved, his lips and tongue leaving her breathless. He tilted his head, deepening the kiss, one hand sliding to the small of her back to hold her even closer. She could feel his heartbeat against her chest, fast and strong, matching her own frantic pulse.
Lily’s mind screamed at her to push him away, to stop this, but her body was melting against his warmth. The cold water pouring down on them only made the heat between them more unbearable.
Her heart hammered wildly in her chest. She hated him—she should hate him—but right now, she felt powerless, caught up in the storm he brought with him every time he touched her.
