My Husband’s “Work Wife” Is Just a SISTER? Let Me Teach Her How Family Trees Work novel Chapter 5

Chapter 5

In three years of marriage, she had never stopped complaining that I chose career first and family later. Now she finally had something she could use as a leverage to pick on

“If you’re home alone, why don’t you come eat here?” she added, but her tone was

nowhere near as warm as before.

“Lacey, Jolene went too. She’s an intern who runs errands for the marketing project

team. Interns were not originally included in the team-building list.”

“I heard Marco specifically called Admin and had her added.”

There was a long silence on the other end before she replied. “Lola, what are you imagining now? It’s a company trip. Isn’t it normal for an intern to go along? Stop targeting her all the time.”

“Marco isn’t that kind of man. You’ve known him for so many years, and you still don’t trust him? If you keep acting like this, you’re only going to push him farther away!”

“A man is already exhausted from fighting outside all day. Then he comes home to a suspicious, paranoid wife. Of course he’s going to be annoyed. I’ve said my piece. Think

about it yourself.”

She hung up. I stared at the wallpaper on my phone, a sweet photo of me and my husband, and went still.

She was right about one thing. I did need to change.

From a fool soaked in happiness, back into the woman who knew how to cut weeds out by the root.

I pulled up old photos of me and Marco and deleted them one by one. Then I backed up the evidence of Jolene’s dirt and Marco’s cheating offered by the alliance’s friends to the

cloud.

I printed a hard copy and put it in my bag. They were going to pay for what they’d done.

Once that was done, I called my lawyer friend Kiley Sampson, from the group.

“Kiley, help me find the exact location of Marco’s company trip, the name of the hot spring hotel, and their room number, right now…”

She answered crisply, “Got it. Anything else?”

“And find me a reliable girl. I need an ‘accidental’ livestream.”

“Understood. Need backup? I can pick you up in half an hour.”

I stood up, walked into the dressing room, and opened my closet. My favorite red silk

dress hung there like a flame.

I put my battle dress back on, sat in front of the mirror, and did my makeup, bold and

bright. Then I grabbed my bag and walked out.

Kiley drove her red sports car hard down the highway. Wind poured in through the open window and whipped my hair around. My blood was running hot, and I could not feel

the cold at all.

At the hot spring hotel in the neighboring city, I showed my marriage certificate at the

front desk.

The moment the clerk saw my husband’s name in the registration record, she cooperated without hesitation and handed me a key card.

Eighth floor, Suite 801.

Standing outside the heavy wooden door, I could hear faint laughter inside. I swiped the card and pushed the door open.

Ignoring the two naked bodies tangled together on the bed, I walked straight to the floor-to-ceiling window instead.

Outside, fireworks were blooming across the night sky, one after another. Beautiful, wasn’t it? That was the sense of occasion I’d arranged for them.

Looking at the fireworks outside, I smiled and video-called Lacey.

She answered quickly. Her well-maintained face appeared on the screen. “Lola? It’s so late, why are you…”

I cut her off with a smile. “Lacey, Marco said he had a surprise for you. Take a look.”

I slowly turned the camera toward the messy bed.
