Chapter 36
-Valeria-
You ever feel like the goddess is just waiting for the perfect moment to ruin your day?
Yeah. That was exactly what happened the second we spotted the finish line.
We were so close, closer than I ever thought we could be.
I knew Zane and Lysander were also dreaming of the moment they would rub our victory in the face of our opponents.
It was right there, just a few meters away, glowing in that gold light like some sort of divine reward from the goddess. Our team had made it through puzzles, traps, shifting mazes, flying arrows, and collapsing floors. We were bruised, breathless, and running on nothing but adrenaline and hope.
We’d done the impossible. We survived.
And then they showed up.
That same group of arrogant jerks who had been on our case since the competition started. The ones who laughed when we tripped up on the first challenge. The ones who thought they were better, faster, stronger, just because they had numbers and played dirty.
I saw them appear from the other corner of the space, annoying smirks painted across on their faces that I wanted to slap off, but I waited for them to make the first move.
“You can’t tell me otherwise but these guys can’t breathe without stalking us.” I remarked.
“They are only following us around because you are here but don’t worry, it’s my fault for not breaking their bones the last time.” Zane stated.
Caius narrowed his eyes, already pulling Alerion and Lysander closer. “There’s no point bantering words with them when we should be focusing on winning.”
“If we don’t put an end to it now, they will keep pestering us,” Alerion growled. “I agree with Zane on this one.”
One of the guys whom I didn’t notice last time, Taka, I think his name was, stepped forward like he was an alpha and we were all
omegas.
“Well, well, look who’s almost made it to the finish line. Would be a shame if something…happened, huh?”
Behind him, a couple of his teammates cracked their knuckles and smiled like they were looking forward to a fight they missed
last time.
Lysander didn’t wait for Alerion’s approval. “I’m going to break his nose and leave him on a wheelchair.”
“Back off,” Alerion said sharply, holding up a hand. “We only care about one thing and that is winning. We will deal with this pests later.”
It seemed like he had suddenly changed his mind.
“They are trying to distract us while they work on their own task, look!” I said, watching as one of the guys sneaked toward the finish line, probably trying to sabotage whatever counted as our official completion.
“I’m going,” I started forward, but Zane caught my wrist.
“Not without me as your backup,” he said. “We don’t know what they’re planning.”
Before I could consider his help, the guys tried to grab me but Zane shoved me behind him and punched them straight in the
face.

“Stop!” Alerion shouted, but it was useless.
They weren’t listening. No one ever did when they were that deep in their own egos.
“Save your breath, brother. They would only listen when you show them who the true Alpha Prince is.” Zane urged him to get
more violent.
“With the way my brother beat up your leader, I thought it would teach you a lesson to stay off but no,”
“Your idiot of a brother had the guts to disgrace our leader in front of everybody and you all think that we would fold our arms and let you win?” Taka questioned, glancing at his teammates for support.
They all burst into a weird form of laughter that sent cold chills down my spine.
The moment their laughter died down, all I could see was the rage in Alerion’s eyes.
Marching forward and grabbing Taka by the collar, he jerked him up into the air, “Who are you calling an idiot?”
“Just because you lifted me off the ground doesn’t make you a man, little boy.” Taka taunted him without a care in the world for
his life.
“Little? I’ll show what this little boy can do..” Alerion growled and flung him to the crushing depths.
I turned away as my heart raced, considering how much time we had wasted on them. Neither Zane or Alerion could realize that their goal was to use our temper to their advantage.
“We can’t lose this because of them,” I told Caius, grabbing his arm. “You and Lysander, go. Finish the challenge. Get us through.”
Caius looked like he wanted to argue, but he must’ve seen the fire in my eyes because he nodded.
“Don’t die,” he said gruffly before pulling Lysander toward the finish line.
“I’ll try my best and you should too,” I muttered and turned to Zane. “While you and Alerion can deal with this once and for all.”
He cracked his knuckles. “Been waiting for an excuse to remind these folks who we are.”
They moved fast, throwing hits in a speed that a vampire could never come close.
I ducked under someone’s arm and pushed them to a free kick from Zane, sending them to the floor with a wounded jaw.
But as much as the fists were flying and the guys kept groaning in rage, I started to feel… watched.
A cold prickle slid down my spine, and I froze for half a second, turning my head slowly.
That’s when I saw them.
Standing at the edge of the darkness, where the light of the chamber barely touched, was a figure cloaked in dark clothing. I couldn’t make out their face at all. Still, something about them screamed far more danger than what we were facing.
1 thought they would run from being caught but they stood there, studying every tiny detail.
And that was when I knew. I knew this person was connected to every big challenge we had faced.
“Zane,” I whispered, nudging him as he slammed someone to the ground. “Look. Over there.”
He followed my gaze and stiffened.
“You see them too,” I said.
“Who the hell is that?”
