She hung up without another word and I slowly turned to face my mate, but he wasn’t standing there
anymore.
With a sigh, I followed after him. “Kai-”
“Don’t.” His voice was harsher than I’d ever heard it before. “Are you going to talk about this?”
I ran my hands down my face with a sigh. “Please just give me time to explain.”
“What’s there to explain? You’re pregnant and you didn’t tell me.”
“Because I didn’t want you to worry, and I didn’t know how to tell you with everything that was going on. I knew you’d be worried-”
“As I fucking should, Daisy!” he exclaimed. “You’re carrying my child and you’ve been throwing yourself right in the middle of danger. You walked into a room with an abusive man.”
“He would never have hurt me,” I cut in. “You told me so yourself.”
“Yes, but I would never have let you go in there if I knew you were fucking pregnant. What the hell? You walked straight into a building that could have been rigged with a bomb. You could have been killed.”
“I didn’t even know I was pregnant then, Kai, but you’re proving my point. You’re already looking for ways to lock me up and you haven’t even known for half an hour-”
“Because you don’t seem to give a shit about your own safety!” he exclaimed, throwing his hands up. “For fucks sake, Daisy. I wouldn’t feel the need to worry about you if you worried about yourself half as much as you did everyone else!”
I started to protest but he cut me off.
“The only reason I worry about you so much is because you don’t do it enough. I love how you care for everyone and I love how you worry for the pack, but it is not at your detriment. You’re fucking pregnant, Daisy. You’re not invincible. If you acted responsible for five fucking minutes maybe I wouldn’t need to lock you up all the damn time.”
After his rant, no one dared to speak.
A knot formed in my throat and I didn’t dare open my mouth for fear that I would begin sobbing. He was right, I knew that much, but that didn’t mean I was happy about being called out like that.
We stood there for a long minute when a knock on the front door snapped us both back to reality. I knew it was Scarlett, but I couldn’t bring myself to move.
He ran his fingers through his hair with a sigh. “I can’t deal with them right now, I’ll be back.”
“Kai, I’m sorry I didn’t tell you.”

He smiled sadly. ‘No, you’re not, because if you had the chance, you’d do it again.”
Without waiting for me to respond, he turned on his heels and headed up the stairs.
Scarlett knocked again, more impatiently.
I exhaled deeply, wiping the stray tears that had gathered at the corner of my eyes and pulled the door open. She stood there with Damien, her hands crossed over her chest.
“Fucking finally, I was wondering how–” she trailed off’ slowly. “Are you alright? You look-”
“I’m fine,” I cut her off. “Come in.”
Behind her, Damien stared at me warily,
He lingered by the door even when Scarlett had gone inside to set up in the living room.
“He found out, didn’t he?” he asked and I nodded slowly. “Fuck, how did it happen? How did he take it?”
“I forgot to throw out the pregnancy test.”
Saying it now was so amusing. If I hadn’t spilled the fucking tea on myself, he would have never checked the cupboard and I would still be living in perfect bliss. To be honest, I was glad he knew, it meant I didn’t have to keep hiding, but the way he found out… it would take a while for him to forgive and trust me again.
“Where is Kai?” Scarlett asked as we made our way into the living room. “He should be here. Can you call him?”
I glanced up the stairs, a pit forming in my stomach. “He’ll be down soon.”
Scarlett’s brows narrowed. “Are you sure everything is okay? If something happened-”
“Nothing happened,” Kai cut in, making his way down the stairs slowly. “You said you found something.”
He stood on the other end of the couch, as far away from me as he could get. My stomach dropped, and with it my heart, but I couldn’t even feel bad because I’d caused this.
Scarlett looked between us, eyes skeptical and wary, but she chose not to comment on it and instead, gestured to the picture on the table, the one of the boy that was still missing.
“Damien’s team analyzed it. The building looks like it’s made from granite. There aren’t a lot of granite buildings anymore, and they were able to identify the brand of clothes.”
“It’s been discontinued,” Damien cut in. “The last one was made over thirty years ago.”
“So what?” I asked. “The kid is into old clothes?”
“The picture is old,” Kai cut in. “At least thirty years. That’s why the kid wasn’t there.”
He didn’t look at me as he spoke, he kept his eyes fixed on the photo.

I tried not to feel sad by that as I spoke. “Why would Lucas have an old picture?”

“That’s exactly what I wanted to know.” Damien said. “I asked the Alphas to look into kids that went missing over thirty years ago. Kids who were hybrids.”
“And?”
“We got three hits across two packs. One in Loran’s, one in Jordan’s and one in the Northern pack. We sent for the parents already. They’re old so we don’t expect much but-”
“It’s better than nothing,” I cut in. “At least we have a lead. Anything else?”
He shook his head. “Not yet, but we’re still-”
He’d barely finished speaking when Kai began heading back up the stairs.
“What the fuck, Kai?” Scarlett asked, standing to her feet. “What is going on with you today? You’re not speaking, you’re avoiding your mate-”
“Drop it please,” I whispered to Scarlett.
“No, he’s acting like a brat. I get that you and Daisy may have fought or whatever-”
“She hid that she was fucking pregnant, Scarlett. That isn’t just a fight.”
