It was bad enough that Scarlett was away, but hearing that Kai wanted to make it permanent left me with a knot in my stomach that wouldn’t loosen up.

I wanted the best for Scarlett, and being away from the palace seemed to give her a sense of peace, but for my own selfish reasons, I wanted her close. Talking with her over the phone was not the same as having her next to me and seeing her in my living room.

I tried not to dwell on it much, but no matter how hard I tried, it always found its way back to the forefront of my mind. Even falling asleep didn’t do much to ease my worries. If anything, it gave me a momentary reprieve.

As soon as I woke up, I was back to thinking about it.

“Daisy,” Kai began softly, making his way into the kitchen. “What are you doing up so early?”

I stood in front of the counter, absentmindedly stirring a mug of tea.

I woke up, unable to fall asleep again. What I wanted was a strong cup of coffee, but unfortunately, I couldn’t have one, so I settled for making myself a cup of jasmine tea.

The smell wafted through the kitchen, but I’d lost the urge to drink it.

I lifted my eyes to my mate.

He stood in the middle of the kitchen, hands shoved into the pockets of his dark sweatpants, his chest bare. His eyes were heavy, probably from just waking up, but there was no mistaking the worry and concern in them.

I shrugged, lifting the mug to my lips. “I couldn’t sleep. I was thinking.”

“About Evan?”

I shook my head.

He had crossed my mind once, but it wasn’t the reason I was awake.

He sighed, crossing the length of the room. He stood behind me, his hand resting flat on my stomach, his lips ghosting over my shoulder. I shivered at the proximity, and his palm on my skin. It was something he did often, but I couldn’t help but think about how it would have a different implication if he knew that I was pregnant.

“You should come back to bed,” he whispered softly. “You look exhausted.”

I was, but it had little to do with the lack of sleep and more to do with everything else.

I leaned my head back against his chest and closed my eyes. Being with him always seemed to make all the noise disappear.

We stood there for a long minute, and I placed the mug down without opening my eyes. I must have miscalculated something because the next thing I knew, hot tea was pouring over my bare skin.

I cursed aloud, jumping back.

“Fuck!” Kai swore. “Where are the paper towels?”

I looked around the kitchen, quickly realizing we’d run out. “Can you get some tissues from the bathroom?”

He nodded, rushing up the stairs.

I rinsed the area as best I could with water from the tap to soothe the burn. Thankfully, it wasn’t that hot, and it wouldn’t leave a scar. All I needed now was a tissue to wipe away the excess water and to clean up the broken pieces of the mug on the floor.

I headed into the store to grab a broom and-

“Daisy?” Kai called out, his voice distant and cold.

“I’m still in the kitchen!” I yelled out. “TI just want to clean up the floor.” I stepped out of the store, broom in hand. “Did you find the-”

I stopped in my tracks when I saw him standing in the middle of the kitchen. He didn’t come with the tissue, but there was something else in his hands.

I thought I’d thrown it away earlier, but with everything going on, I must have forgotten it in the bathroom bottom drawer… the same place we kept the fucking tissues.

I opened my mouth to explain, but no words would come out.

“Say something, Daisy,” he hissed out, his voice shaky. “What the hell is this?”

My mouth wouldn’t move. It was like I’d lost control of my own vocal chords. No explanation I gave would be able to defend my injustice.

“Why the hell is there a used pregnancy test in our bathroom?” he asked, his voice cool and collected.

I would have preferred it if he yelled. I could handle his anger, but this unusual calmness worried me. I couldn’t read him, and his wall was firmly in place. The man in front of me looked like a stranger and not the male I’d spent nights sleeping next to.

“I took a test,” I managed out finally.

“And?” he asked. “Tell me that the second line is from fucking dust or something. Tell me you’re not fucking pregnant.”

I opened my mouth, but all that came out was “I can explain.”

He scoffed, running his fingers through his hair. “How long have you known?”

“Kai-”

“How long?” he asked, his voice rising for the first time since this conversation started.

I opened my mouth to speak, but the sound of my phone ringing cut through the air, silencing us both.
