He smiled, wiping away the tears on my cheeks before trailing his hands down to res ton either side of my stomach.

“Do you know how far along you are?” he asked and I shook my head.

“I didn’t want to find out without you.”

It was the truth.

It was bad enough that I was hiding it, I didn’t want to do any of the ultrasounds without him. He deserved that much.

He kissed me again, this time on my lips. The kiss was soft and gentle, and it had my toes curling as he gripped my hips firmly and pulled me flush against him.

“A fucking baby,” he murmured against my lips. “It’s fucking unbelievable.”

It seemed surreal to me too.

Perhaps it was because I wasn’t showing yet and I hadn’t seen an ultrasound, but sometimes, I still found it hard to believe that a baby was actually growing in my stomach. I’d pinched myself one too many times, thinking it was a dream I’d wake up from.

“It’s good to see that you’ve reconciled your differences,” Damien drawled causing me to pull back.

Kai didn’t release me. He still kept me pinned firmly to him. Despite the flush in my cheeks and me trying to pull back, he held me close.

“Don’t you have somewhere else to be?” he asked, his voice a bit tighter than usual.

“Great, you forgive her but you can’t forgive me. That’s a bit sexist, you know? I’ve been your best friend for ages. I should be-”

“Damien,” he growled, the warning evident in his tone. “Leave, now please.”

Damien held his hands up in mock surrender and walked out of the kitchen but not before snagging a few cookies from the fridge. This time, I heard the front door open and close gently.

Kai leaned over to kiss me again, but I turned my face at the last moment, letting his lips press against my

cheeks.

“You have to forgive him,” I said softly. “He was only doing it because I asked him to. He wanted to tell you.”

Kai raised a brow, finally releasing me and taking a step back.

Things were still tense, at least on my end, but I forced myself to look him dead in the eye as I continued.

“He was only trying to defend me today. He’s right about being your friend.”

“Are you done defending him?” he drawled and I nodded slowly. “Good, because I’m not pissed with him.”

I was taken aback. “You’re not?”

“I was in the beginning. Trust me, I wanted to bash his fucking face in for not telling me, and for letting you into those dangerous situations even when he knew you were pregnant.”

“But?”

“But nothing,” he said, shrugging. “I’m glad that someone knew. If Damien had thought you were in any real danger, he would have told me. I trust him with my life, and with yours. You were never alone in the past few days. He was careful. Even if I didn’t know, I’m glad he did.”

I shouldn’t have been shocked by the maturity of Kai’s response. After all, he’d been alive for over a century.

This morning, I thought for sure that our relationship was broken beyond repair, and now, here he was, telling me that it was all okay.

“Don’t ever lie to me again, Daisy,” he said, snapping me back to reality. “Whatever is going on, we talk about it like fucking adults. We’re mates. You can’t pick and choose what difficult conversations we have.”

“Okay,” I nodded. “But you need to do the same.”

“I always-”

“No, Kai, you don’t,” I said softly. “You’re always trying to protect me from everything… including myself. Sometimes you need to give me the agency to choose my own problems. I promise not to run headfirst into danger, but you can’t hide that there’s danger from me, deal?”

“Look at us having mature conversations,” he teased before nodding. “Deal, princess.”

He kissed me again, lifting me easily into his arms and carrying me up the stairs. Nothing felt better than just being in his arms, knowing that I was safe.

I knew it would take a while for me to get to a place where I didn’t feel the need to try and protect everyone at my detriment, but I was willing to try.

“You are going to be an amazing mother,” he whispered to me.

At first, I thought I’d imagined it. After all, it was late at night. We’d made love, done some work around the house and settled back into bed for the night. His breathing had evened out so much that I thought he’d fallen asleep from all the exhaustion.

“You mentioned in the kitchen that you wanted some good karma,” he continued. “To be a good mother. You don’t need that karma, Daisy. You’re going to be the best mother to our child.”

I admired his unwavering faith in me. It was refreshing to have someone who believed in me even when I

didn’t.

“You don’t know that, Kai.”
