1 felt groggy as hell and my head felt fuzzy, but I couldn’t feel any more pain.

It had come out of nowhere. One second I was standing and the next, it felt like a thousand fucking needles were shooting into my spine at the same time. I couldn’t voice out the words, couldn’t say anything that would have perfectly encapsulated what I felt in that moment.

I barely registered being put in the car or the nurses loading me onto the stretcher. I just remembered a mask being placed over my face and then everything went black. When I came to, I was in a hospital bed and I couldn’t feel a thing.

I looked around, taking in the IV that was hooked into my arm and the heart monitor to the side. A nurse stood in front of it, taking notes. I opened my mouth to call out to her, but my throat was so dry that it came out more like a wheeze.

Thankfully, she heard me because her head snapped over immediately. “You should have some water.”

She poured me a glass and helped me into a sitting position so I could drink.

“Where’s Kai?” I asked the moment my tongue could work again. “What happened?”

“Your skin absorbed the wolf’s bane,” she explained softly. “It wasn’t much by any standard but because you were pregnant-”

“Were?” I asked softly.

It felt like my heart had fucking stopped.

I wasn’t the most excited about the idea of being pregnant, but I had weeks to get used to it. I had weeks to come to terms with the idea and to accept it. I’d dreamed about the coming months with my child and with Kai. To hear that it was all gone-

“It was a slip of the tongue, I apologize,” she said quickly, snapping me out of my negative spiral. “You’re still pregnant.”

The relief that hit me made my legs quake.

Before I could say anything to her, the door slammed open and Kai rushed in. He looked a fucking mess. His hair was tousled as if he’d pulled at it, his eyes were filled with worry, and his shirt was disheveled.

He rushed over to my side, brushing my hair out of my face as he pressed his lips to my forehead. “Thank the goddess you’re awake. I was so fucking worried. How are you?”

I shrugged. “I don’t know. I don’t feel anything.”

“It’s the after effects of the drugs,” the nurse explained. “It should wear off in a few hours. You’re going to be weak for the next couple of days. It is important that you take things easy and try not to do any strenuous activity. Your body took a real hit today and you’re lucky it wasn’t worse.”

With one last warning look in my direction, she walked away.

As soon as she was gone, I threw my arms around Kai’s neck. “The baby is okay.”

He pulled me close, lips ghosting my temple as he murmured sweet nothings into my ear.

He probably didn’t understand my panic or why I felt the need to say that, but what I loved about Kai was that he didn’t need to understand. He offered up his comfort freely.

“How’s Scarlett?” I asked once I’d pulled back from him.

“Nothing from the doctors yet. We’re still waiting.”

I cursed. “Do you think she’s going to be okay, Kai? I want you to be honest with me.”

He was silent for too long before finally sighing. “For all our sakes, she better be.”

I had no idea what he meant by that and he didn’t elaborate, not even when I asked. He just smiled, kissed my cheek and told me not to worry about it.

He sat by my bedside, tracing circles on the back of my hand with his thumb.

Damien poked his head in for a second, smiled at me and then disappeared. He looked like shit. In all the time I’d known him, I’d never seen him look so strung out and worried about anything. Whatever was going on with Scarlett had to be serious enough for him to feel this

way.

A doctor came to check in on me after about an hour. By then, the drugs had begun wearing off and the exhaustion started to hit full time. It felt like I’d been run over by a fucking truck and I could barely keep my eyes open, but there was something I needed.

“Can we get an ultrasound?” I asked.

The doctor stopped in her tracks and Kai’s head snapped up to me. Having both eyes on me felt intimidating as fuck but I kept my voice even as I continued.

“We’re here now,” I argued. “We might as well get it done, right?”

The doctor smiled, a soft curve of her lips that radiated warmth. “I’ll get a tech up here as quickly as possible.”

She left the room after and immediately the door shut behind me, Kai’s head snapped up.

“Are you sure about this?” he asked and I nodded.

“There’s been so much bad news and I just… I want something good just in case-”

“Don’t think like that, Daisy. Nothing is going to happen to Scarlett.”

He sounded so sure.
