I felt nothing which was weird because I always felt something.

My mother told me I came into the world screaming my lungs out. The doctors had laughed saying I must’ve had an adult pair of lungs. As a child, I was always seeking the next big feeling.

I jumped from swings, I did gymnastics and ballet, I threw myself into dangerous sports and tried to imitate everything I saw Kai and Damien doing. Most of those things ended up with me badly hurt but I reveled in the pain because it meant I was alive.

Waking up and feeling nothing was weird… it felt wrong.

The room was dark save for a little bedside lamp that was on. Through that lamp, I saw Damien. His eyes were trained on me, like he was scared I’d run away. It was clear from his disheveled hair and clothes that he hadn’t slept at all.

One glance at the clock told me that it was almost five in the morning.

“Did you sit there all night like my personal guard?”

The words came out shaky and cracked, probably from the dryness in

my

throat.

His eyes snapped up to me instantly. He held my gaze for a second and everything fucking crumbled. I’d never seen such emotion on his face before, and in the centuries that I’d known him, I’d seen him cry two times.

The first was at his parent’s funeral. The second was at Kai’s mother’s funeral. Today would make it the third.

He buried his face into his hands, his shoulders shaking. “Fuck, you’re awake.”

“I am. If I knew it would take me almost dying to make you cry, I would have done it a long time ago.”

He shot me a scathing look. “Don’t fucking joke about that.”

He reached for me with shaky fingers, gently brushing a strand of hair out of my face. He leaned forward, as if he wanted to kiss me, but at the last minute, he pulled back, clearing his throat.

He reached for the jug of water by the table and poured me a drink. I gulped it down greedily, relishing in the warmth that it spread to my stomach.

“What happened?” I asked, taking in the bandages wrapped around me and the wires poking out of my skin.

“You were shot, Scarlett. You almost fucking died.”

I remembered them bursting in, and I remembered trying to get Daisy out of harm’s way.

It took me a second before I remembered the shot. I remembered hearing the sound and wondering who it hit before I felt the burning pain in my chest. Everything else after was a blur.

“How did I get here?” I asked. “Was there an ambulance?”

He just smiled. “You should rest. I need to call Kai. He asked to be informed.”

He started to leave and I couldn’t stop the anger that bubbled up in my chest.

I was tired of the push and pull, tired of his dismissals and him acting like we were just strangers.

“So that’s it then?” I snapped and he stopped in his tracks. “You’re just going to walk away.”

“I’m calling Kai.”

“Of course, it’s always fucking Kai. When are you going to stop using him as an excuse? When are you going to stop hiding behind him? That excuse got old after the third time.”

“Scarlett, stop-”

“No!” I couldn’t stop my voice from rising. “For fucks sake, Damien. Why are you doing this? I almost died. One would think that’s enough for you to get your head out of your ass and stop pretending you don’t want me.”

He turned to face me, eyes burning with molten heat. “I never said I didn’t want you.”

“I’d never have guessed with how you were acting.” I held his gaze. “I’m not just going to be that person you fuck when you’re horny and tired.”

His jaw clenched. “You’re not-”

“Really? Then how do you explain crossing pack lines just for a quick lay? Did you inform Kai about that too?”

The tips of his ears turned pink. “Scarlett-”

I never got to hear what he wanted to say because the door slammed open and Kai rushed in.

He pulled me into his arms, murmuring words of relief as he hugged me. I glanced up over his shoulder and saw Damien quietly sneaking out. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t hurt, but unfortunately, I was used to him leaving.

I chewed on the inside of my cheek to keep from crying and focused my attention on Kai. “I’m fine, you’re fretting.”

He pulled back, giving Daisy the chance to hold me.

“I’m so glad you’re alive,” she whispered. “I was so scared.”

I smiled lazily at her. “I’m hard to kill, Daisy. How’s the baby?”

There was a twinge of sadness in her eyes so I was shocked when she answered in the positive.

I had so many questions concerning that but before I could ask anything, she turned to Kai. “Can you get me something to drink please? Not water, perhaps something with sugar. I saw a vending machine outside.”

Kai didn’t even hesitate before standing to his feet. “I’ll be right back.”
