Chapter 143

Damien checked his watch every five minutes.

It took a lot of convincing to get him out of the house so Daisy and Scarlett could have some alone time. He’d fought it at first, but even he knew that they needed it. He agreed to go with me on a patrol drive while they talked.

“How much time do you think they’ll need to get it all out?” he asked, lifting his eyes from his watch. “I reckon an hour is enough time.”

I shook my head at his overprotectiveness. “They’ll let us know if they need anything.”

He groaned. “I hate not knowing what’s happening. Maybe I should call.”

“Don’t. Leave them be, Damien. They’ll be fine. They need the alone time and goddess knows so do you.”

He raised a brow, suddenly understanding that this intervention wasn’t just for them, it was for him too.

I’ve known Damien since I was in fucking diapers. I know every side to him what exists and I have watched him shove his emotions down for over a century. I have watched him bury his own feelings in favor of helping another person and I know that for as long as he’s in that house with Scarlett, he will not process what happened.

I pulled the car to a stop in the middle of the woods.

I asked the guards for a spot far enough from the pack that no one would hear the noise, but close enough that we’d be able to rush back if need be.

“What is this, Kai?” he asked, hands crossed over his chest. “You said we were doing patrol.”

“We will after this if you still want to,” I said simply, getting out of the car. “Right now, we’re going to spar.”

“Get back in the car, Kai. We need to go.”

I didn’t respond.

He sighed, getting into the passenger seat. The moment he realized the key wasn’t there, he cursed aloud.

I held up the keys, shaking them to get his attention. “If you want to get it, you’ll have to spar me for it.”

He rolled his eyes. “What are we, thirteen? I’m not doing this shit with you, Kai. I need to go back to Scarlett.”

“Why? You’re not mated to her. For all we know, she could want space from you.”

His jaw clenched in anger, but he kept his cool and remained seated in the car,

I sighed, deciding to try something else. “You can’t hide how you feel forever. Not about this loss, and not about her.”

He was silent for a full minute before finally storming out of the car. He swore, pulling his shit over his head with one hand.

“One round of sparring,” he told me, walking into the clearing. “After that, we leave”

I smiled. “Deal.”

The moment he threw the first punch, I knew there was no way in hell that we’d spend just one round.

When lycans sparred, it was much different than humans or werewolves.

We sparred with the intention to seriously hurt. We healed quick. A broken bone could heal in hours and an injured limb could heal in a day. As long as the sparring partner wasn’t dead, we could do whatever the fuck we wanted.

When I first started sparring, I’d leave the rink with dislocated bones, casts, and even slings. It was considered dishonorable if your opponent wasn’t left badly injured.

I walked into that clearing with Damien knowing there was every possibility that one or both of us would leave there badly hurt and sure enough, by the time the exhaustion wore out and we both lay on the ground breathing heavily, my entire body ached.

From my heavy breathing, I was sure I had a few cracked ribs.

I looked over at Damien, unable to hide my laugh when I saw just how terrible he looked. His left eye was swollen, and his left arm was bent at an uncomfortable angle. I’d popped it straight out of the socket.

“You’re one mean mother fucker,” he managed out, turning to face me. “Thank you.”

I waved him off. “Are you ready to talk now?”

He sat up slowly, popping his shoulder back into place like it was nothing. “I don’t know what to say. I didn’t know about the baby. It shouldn’t hurt like it does.”

“It was still your child. It doesn’t matter if you knew or not.”

“She wants kids, you know? She wants a family.” He smiled bitterly. “I’m not family material.”

“That’s not true-”

“Spare me the sob details, Kai. I don’t know what it’s like to have a family. You had your mother, but I didn’t. My family saw me as a stepping stone to greatness. I don’t know how to love another person.”

I hesitated for a moment, turning to face him so I could fully track his expression as I asked my next question. “What about Scarlett? Don’t you love her?”

He let out a shaky breath.

“What I feel for her is…. it’s maddening,” he admitted. “I don’t know if calling it love is enough to quantify it. I want to be with her. I know I don’t deserve her, but I can’t picture her with anyone else. I won’t be able to give her the family she deserves, and I’m not cruel enough to force her to accept that.”
