There was an initial awkwardness after I sat down, but once we started talking, it was just like old times.
Someone once said that the best friends were the ones that you could laugh with even when things were going to shit, and that was exactly how Scarlett and I were. We didn’t speak about the hunters or the baby, we spoke about everything else.
In the end, we were laughing so hard that our sides hurt. Looking back, it was stupid how I avoided coming here for so long.
“That is the worst casserole I have ever eaten,” she grumbled, wiping her mouth with a napkin.
We’d taken to trying the food that was sent to us. Some were amazing, some were obviously store bought, and some were fucking terrible.
“Agreed,” I mumbled, trying to drown out the taste with some water. “I wonder if she tasted it before sending.”
“Hopefully by the time people start sending you stuff they get better at cooking,” she teased.
My brows rose. “Why would they send me stuff?”
“Do you really think that you’ll give birth to the future King or Queen and people won’t send stuff? Your house is going to be overflowing with gifts every day for months.”
A small laugh burst out of me but I couldn’t help but watch Scarlett closely. This was the first time she’d mentioned my pregnancy at all and I wasn’t sure how to react to it.
She must have noticed me staring because she sighed. “I can be happy for you, Daisy. You don’t have to look at me like I’m a ticking time bomb.”
My cheeks burned. “I didn’t mean to-”
“I know you didn’t, but I also know you. You’re not the first to do it either.” She sat up, crossing her legs underneath her. Look, I just want to put this all behind me. I want you to keep me updated about your baby and the pregnancy. I don’t want you to hide things from me because of what happened.”
“Are you sure?” I asked and she nodded.
“Positive.”
It would take some getting used to, but I was willing to try,
The sound of the lock turning cut off our conversation and I nearly screamed as the men walked into the house.
They were covered in bruises from head to toe. They were limping, and I could tell that Kai was breathing difficultly as he spoke.
“What the fuck happened?” I asked, rushing to my feet. “Was there an attack-”

“They were sparring, Daisy,” Scarlett drawled, not even sparing them another glance. “You’ll get used to the sight.”
I stared at them in disbelief. “This is sparring?”
She nodded. “This is how all lycans spar. They’ll be fine in twenty-four hours. We heal quickly.”
I still couldn’t believe it. It looked like they’d gone through the wringer.
“For my sanity, I hope this baby isn’t a boy,” o mumbled and Scarlett laughed.
“Females train too, Daisy. Unfortunately, you’re fucked either gender.”
The boys stumbled up the stairs, presumably to get cleaned, and while they did, I heated up a bowl of pasta. It was sent by the elders, and it tasted fucking divine. Scarlett and I had almost finished the whole thing when we remembered that we had males to feed.
I also cut a few pieces of pie and arranged them on a little tray. I hadn’t tasted it yet, but it looked good, and it smelled nice too. Surely they couldn’t have messed it up that-
“Thank you for coming over.”
I glanced over at Damien.
He looked better now that there wasn’t any crusted blood on him. His swollen eye was already coming back to normal but he still leaned more on his right shoulder than the left.
“It was nothing-”
“It meant something to her, so it wasn’t nothing,” he cut me off. “She needs a friend now more than ever. You can’t run away again.”
“I won’t.”
“How far along are you?”
I hesitated for a moment. “Eight weeks, why?”
“You still have a few months before you start to show. I don’t know how she’ll react to it. She may say that she’s fine but-”
He didn’t need to finish his statement… I already knew.
“She might get overinvolved or be overbearing. I just want you to be patient with her,” he continued. “She
means well.”
“Damien, you don’t have to explain her to me. She’s my friend too. I’ll understand.”
“You say that now, but the hormones can get in the way.” He ran his hands through his hair with a sigh. “If she’s doing too much, just talk to me. I’ll find a way to relay it to her so she doesn’t get hurt.”

I still didn’t understand why they hadn’t made things official. It was clear that he loved her, probably more than he even knew.
I nodded. “I will.”
