Chapter 145
I’d forgotten that Eva even existed because I hadn’t seen her in a while.

Some part of my brain had assumed she left sometime during the conflict with the hunters. Seeing her in front of me was as jarring as seeing a ghost.
“Is there something on my face?” she asked, chuckling awkwardly. “I hope I’m not interrupting.”
I still couldn’t snap myself back to reality. Thankfully, Kai stepped in front of me, taking the box of cupcakes from her.
“Thank you for that,” he said softly. “I’m sure Scarlett will appreciate you showing up.”
She waved him off. “It was nothing. Where is she, maybe I could say hi-”
She side stepped Kai and took a step into the house. That was enough to snap me out of whatever haze I was in. I quickly stepped in front of her, stopping her right in her tracks. Her brows rose in surprise.
I didn’t know much, but I knew that Scarlett definitely did not want to see her. She didn’t like Eva on a good day, I didn’t need to be a mind reader to know that seeing her right now would only stress her out more.
“You’re in my way,” Eva said, her voice tighter than usual.
“Scarlett isn’t accepting visitors right now,” I told her simply. “Perhaps you can come back another day.”
“I’m here right now,” she argued, crossing her arms over her chest. “It doesn’t make sense for me to leave and return.”
I didn’t budge.
She sighed dramatically. “If she doesn’t want to see me then she can tell me herself. I have no problem with leaving.” She tried to side step me, but I followed her, remaining in her path. “Okay, this isn’t funny, Daisy.”
“I’m not trying to be funny. Scarlett doesn’t want to see anyone.”
“You’re here.”
“I don’t see what that has to do with anything.”
“I have known her for far longer than you’ve even been alive. You don’t get to make those decisions. I’ve been
a friend of this family for ages. Just because you’re Luna now doesn’t mean-”
Kai’s answering growl was low, but it still sent shockwaves down my spine. “Watch it.”
Eva pursed her lips in annoyance, her eyes flashing with anger. She stared at me intently. There was a look in her eyes, very unlike anything I’d seen. It was a tiny crack in her otherwise perfect armour.
“Look,” she sighed dramatically. “I understand that you’re trying to protect her, it’s honestly admirable but you don’t need to protect her from me. Just let me give her what I brought and-”

I was aware that I was being harsher than necessary, but she was just proving to be s stubborn s a mule. There wa no reason why she had to see Scarlett now. Id made my stance abundantly clear, it took nothing for her to accept it nd fucking move on.
There was silence for. Full minute.
I counted each agonizing second, staring her straight in the eye, hands crossed over my chest to keep an unwavering front but she wouldn’t back down. It was as if she were hoping I’d change my mind.
“Leave, Eva,” a voice came from behind me.
Damien walked past me and stood next to Eva. There was no softness in his expression, and she must have noticed it too because her spine instantly straightened and her expression grew softer.
“I just wanted-”
“I don’t give a fuck about what you wanted,” he cut her off. “Daisy asked you to leave. She may be too nice to throw you out, but I sure as hell am not. Fuck off.”
Her jaw tightened in annoyance, but she knew better than to argue. She risked a glance at Kai, almost as if she were expecting him to come to her defense. Kai said nothing, he just made his way over to me his eyes locked on my face, a silent question in them.
“I’m fine,” I mouthed.
I heard the door open but by the time I’d looked up, Eva had slammed the door shut.
I heard her car pull out of the driveway, and I couldn’t help but feel a twinge of sadness for her. It didn’t have to end this way, if she’d just left when I told her, she would’ve never been embarrassed by Damien.
“Good fucking riddance,” Damien mumbled under his breath before heading over to where Scarlett sat.
It was obvious she’d heard the entire conversation but she chose to stay out of it. To be honest, I would’ve preferred to be able to stay out as well.
“Hey,” Kai whispered, his voice soft in my ears. “Are you okay?”
I hummed. “It’s fine. I just feel a little bad for her sometimes.”
“Why?”
I shrugged. “You were all her friends. I assume it’s a bit awkward for her, and she just wants her friends back. Sure she isn’t going about it the right way but maybe if I just put out an olive branch–“
“She’s a century old lycan, Daisy, if she doesn’t know how to act right by now-”
“That’s not fair and you know it,” I cut him off. “How many times have you messed up, or Damien? Why do you get second chances and she doesn’t?”

He brushed a strand of hair out of my face and I felt his lips press gently against my forehead. “I support whatever it is you want to do.”
“Thank you.”
“But,” he cut me off. “I don’t want you to do it because you feel responsible. She isn’t your project to fix.”
