Chapter 147

Kai wasn’t in bed when I woke up.

It wasn’t unusual so I didn’t think much about it. I could smell breakfast through the crack in our bedroom door. The smell of fresh coffee spurred me to take the quickest shower possible.

I threw my jacket over my shoulder as I walked down the steps and was shocked to find Kai standing in the middle of the kitchen in nothing but his boxers.

“Good morning, princess,” he said without taking his eyes off the pan. “Sit down, I’m almost done.”

“Why aren’t you dressed?” I blurted out. “It’s almost eight.”

He finally turned, but it wasn’t to respond to me, it was to place a perfectly grilled cheese sandwich in front of me. He poured me a mug of fresh juice and kissed my forehead before returning to the pan to make one for himself.

“Kai-”

“We’re staying home today,” he said simply. “You need a day off.”

My brows knitted in confusion.

I wasn’t against the day off, but it did feel weirdly suspicious that he was doing it right after our conversation yesterday.

“Is there something you’re not telling me?” I asked softly. “You know I didn’t mean-”

“I bought a crib.”

I went silent at his admission.

My mind had gone through a thousand different possible statements he’d make, but this hadn’t even made the cut.

I blinked.

It took me a second to even remember what a crib was.

“Why?” I asked. “When did you even get it?”

He shrugged. “I woke up early this morning. I just kept staring at you and thinking about the baby and I… well,

I fucking bought it. I should’ve asked you first but I didn’t know if you’d want to talk about it. You may hate it but I just-”

He trailed off with a sigh.

Since the ultrasound, we’d barely spoken about the child.

It was deliberate on my part. I just couldn’t bring myself to continue talking about my child after everything that happened. I was excited, unbelievably so, but I didn’t know how to be excited for me and sad for Scarlett at the same time. It was easier to pretend that it wasn’t happening.

I realized just how unfair that was to Kai.

“I’m sorry,” I whispered softly. “I didn’t mean to shut you out.”

“You didn’t.”

I snorted, trying to blink back tears.

I fucking hated the pregnancy hormones and how it made me tear up at every given opportunity. A few days ago I cried when I saw a baby bird in a nest.

Kai, observant as ever, made his way over to me and brushed away the stray tears that leaked from my eyes.

“It’s okay,” he assured me, voice soft and gentle. “I can return it if you-”

I shook my head. “You deserve to be happy about your child.”

“So do you,” he whispered. “You don’t have to carry everyone else’s pain, especially not Scarlett’s.”

I sighed loudly.

Scarlett had said the exact same thing, but I still couldn’t shake that bitter voice in my mind that told me it was my fault.

Roger was long gone, but his memory lingered. He’d gotten what he wanted at the end of the day, even if it wasn’t the way he planned.

“When will it get here?” I asked and he shrugged

“Much later I’m sure.”

That gave me enough time. “I need to go somewhere.”

He straightened instantly. “I’ll take a quick shower and-”

“Alone, Kai,” I said softly.

His brows rose in concern. “Are you sure?”

I nodded. “The pack is safe. I’ll be back before you know it, I promise.”

He didn’t seem too sold on the idea. I genuinely expected him to refuse but after a long silence, he nodded.

“If anything goes wrong, call me.”

I rolled my eyes at his stern tone. “I will.”

I hadn’t been to the pack house since that day.

I ignored the whispers and the bows that people sent my way as I walked past and headed straight for the room where we were attacked.

Neither the room nor the floor were scaled off, but people avoided both. I wasn’t sure if it was superstition, fear, or a little bit of both, but I was grateful for the chance to be alone.

I pushed the door open, bracing myself for the sight of blood on the floor despite knowing that it had already been cleaned.

“It looks very different now, doesn’t it?”

My head snapped up so fast that I heard a crack in my neck.

Scarlett stood by the window, practically hidden behind the curtains. Her hands were shoved into her pockets. She looked a bit better than she did yesterday.

“It does,” I said in response to her question. “The furniture was changed.”

“Damien says that Kai burned it all. He wanted everything changed.”

He’d succeeded on that front, but despite the new furniture, I couldn’t help but still picture things the way they were that night.

“You know one of the best things about living for so long?” She asked and I shook my head. “You tend to forget. It my not seem like it now but in the next fifty years, this will barely be a memory.”

I wasn’t sure if she was trying to convince me or herself.
