Chapter 148

I turned to her, eyes wide with shock.

She stared straight out the window, her eyes squeezed shut.

“What did you say?” I asked slowly.

I knew the question would come sooner or later. After what I saw at the hospital, the way they clung to each other for support, I knew he’d be a fool not to ask. There were certain kinds of pain that bonded people together.

“I didn’t say anything. As soon as he asked, I grabbed the keys and came here.” She sighed deeply, running her fingers through her hair. “I was hoping I’d get answers.”

“Did you?”

She shook her head. “Turns out that chairs can’t talk much.”

I couldn’t help but laugh at that.

She finally turned away from the window and sat at the edge of the bed, hands folded neatly in her lap.

“If he had asked me a month ago, I would have leaped at the opportunity. I would’ve made him swear a little but it would’ve been a no brainer. Now, it feels like he’s only doing it because of what happened. I don’t think I’m selfish enough to have a pity mate.”

“I don’t think it’s pity, Scarlett.”

She snorted. “Not everyone gets the fairytale romance like you, Daisy. Kai knew what he wanted the moment he laid eyes on you. Damien isn’t like that. To him, this is the logical choice.”

“Did he say that or are you just assuming?”

She said nothing.

She didn’t have to, we both knew what the answer was.

“Any advice?” She asked finally

I shook my head. “Unfortunately not.”

“It was worth a try.” She rose to her feet. “I don’t want to go home just yet. I would drive round the pack but if one more person comes up to me to talk about what happened what happened, I will lose my shit. Can I go with you?”

“Of course, you never have to ask,”

She gave me a tight smile. “Thanks, is it okay if I just stay in the guest room the whole time? I really don’t

want to…”

She didn’t need to finish, I knew exactly what she meant.

“Of course, come on. I’m sure Kai would be happy to have you around.”

To say Kai was surprised to see the both of us would’ve been an understatement.

His brows practically disappeared behind his hairline and his eyes widened to the point of saucers. He offered Scarlett lunch and despite refusing at first, he managed to convince her to eat with us.

Damien never called or texted, but I was sure Kai had already texted him.

There was a knock on the door sometime around two. Kai went to answer it and as soon as he returned with a cardboard box in hand, Scarlett excused herself.

A knot formed in my throat and I wanted nothing more than to chase after her, but I knew she probably wanted to be alone right now.

“We don’t have to do this today,” Kai said softly to me.

This was such a hard place to be. On one hand, I wanted to protect Scarlett, I wanted to be there for her and comfort her. On the other, I didn’t want to punish my mate by forcing him to hide his excitement.”

“We can do it another weekend.”

I shook my head. “It’s fine, I’ll just check on her later.”

He asked about three more times if I was sure and only them did we take the box upstairs.

Kai led me to an empty room just two doors down from ours.

It was right beside his study and was the perfect place to build a nursery. The window overlooked the garden and soft light streamed through.

“We’d have to paint the walls,” I told him, staring at the bland white paint.

“We can do anything you want. It can be fucking rainbow colored if you ask.”

I bit back a smile at his enthusiasm.

He took out the pieces of the crib and I sat cross legged on the floor, watching as he read through the instructions. His brows were creased in concentration and I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t an attractive sight.

He put the entire thing together on his own. I wasn’t sure if it was the hormones but watching him do such a simple task was far more erotic than it needed to be.

“I love you, Daisy,” he said suddenly, “but christening our baby’s nursery is not very high on my to do list.”

My cheeks turned a bright shade of red. “I’m sorry.”

“There’s nothing to be sorry about, princess.” He made his way over to me and placed both hands on my shoulders. “I’ll take care of you, I always do, just not here.”

I forced my eyes way from him and onto the crib. It was a simple beige color with bars on each side to keep the baby from falling out.

I tried to focus on it and not Kai’s thumb that was tracing small circles over my collarbone.

“You did a good job,” I managed out, trying to keep my voice even. “It’s pretty.”

He just hummed.

I could feel his eyes fixed on me rather than the crib.
