“I don’t know how I feel about finding out that your father is here through the grape vibe,” Scarlett drawled as she made her way into my office.
Two days had passed since my father first arrived. He still remained in the pack house much to his disappointment. Kai had guards watching over him every minute of the day. So far, he was healing quickly and he hadn’t gotten into any trouble so I considered it a win.
I looked up at Scarlett. She leaned against my doorway, her hands crossed over her chest. She looked better than the last time I saw her. She didn’t have those deep bags under her eyes anymore, but there was still an air of sadness that clung to her.
“I apologize,” I said softly. “I’ve been trying to find these fucking rogues. My father has been of no help. We don’t have a proper database for rogues and whoever these are, they’re not anyone we’ve heard of before.”
“What exactly is going on? There are so many rumors that I don’t know what to believe.”
I gestured for her to come inside. I waited until she shut the door behind her before I told her everything. We were deliberate about keeping the reality of his presence a secret. I wasn’t sure that the pack would be so pleased to know that we were spending that much to get him out of trouble even if it wasn’t pack funds being used.
By the time I was done speaking, Scarlett stared at me dumbfounded. “That’s… fucked up.”
“Tell me about it,” I groaned, resisting the urge to tug at my hair from the roots. “Kai says he can arrange the money by this afternoon. Tonight, we’ll go with my father to make the drop.”
“You’re going as well?” she asked and I nodded. “I don’t know how I feel about the both of you leaving without protection. Anything could happen.”
“Kai is a lycan, they can’t kill him.”
“True, but you’re not… at least not yet, and you’re pregnant. His main focus would be keeping you safe and that can be dangerous if a fight were to break out.”
I wanted to protest, but she was right. The smart choice would be for me to stay behind, but I wouldn’t be able to sit back while both of them were out there. The likelihood of Kai killing my father before they reached the drop off point was astronomical and I couldn’t risk that.
“Let Damien and me go with you,” Scarlett offered.
I instantly shook my head. “I could never ask-”
“Good, because you’re not asking, I’m offering. You know as well as I do that you can’t take pack guards. The news will spread before tomorrow morning. We’re both lycans, we’re your best bet.”
I pursed my lips, desperately trying to think up a better solution, but there was none.
“Fine,” I mumbled. “I’ll have to talk to Kai about it first-”

“No need,” she cut me off. “I’ll do it.”
She stood to leave.
“Scarlett!” I called out, causing her to freeze with her hand on the doorknob. “Thank you.”
She hesitated, nodded curtly and left.

I don’t know what she told Kai, but by the time he came to the pack house to pick me up, he told me Scarlett and Damien would be escorting us but he did not look pleased about it.
Dasd gave us the drop off location-a spot in the middle of the woods, right in the middle of the neutral ground connecting our pack and the Northern pack. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t anxious, but the quicker we got this over with, the better for everyone involved.
We set out around seven. By that time, the sun had already set and the moon was high up in the sky. The sky looked bleak and bland, I could barely even count the stars.
Dad sat in the back seat of the car, his hands folded neatly in his lap. He didn’t say a single word throughout the drive unless it was to give us instructions.
“Here,” he said softly.
We stopped in the middle of a clearing. It looked perfectly normal, just a bunch of trees and overgrown grass.
“Are you sure?” I asked and he nodded.
“That mark on the tree up ahead.” He gestured to a tree to my right. “That’s theirs. It’s how I know.”
It took me a second to notice it, but once I did, I couldn’t un-see it. A small ring of circles was carved into the bark of the tree.
“What now?” Kai asked, turning to him. “When do they come?”
Dad glanced at the car clock. “We usually meet around eight thirty. They should be here any minute from
now.”
Kai nodded, his eyes glazing as he mind linked the others. They were in a car behind us, hidden between the trees. Their job was to stay hidden unless a fight broke out. Kai briefed them earlier while I retrieved my father. I had no idea what he told them, but I was sure it had something to do with getting me to safety if need be.
The minutes seemed to drag by slowly.
I glanced at the clock almost every second, desperately waiting for eight thirty to hit so we could make the exchange.
“Where are they?” I asked a minute after the allotted time. “Are you sure this is the right place?”
My father sighed dramatically. “Yes, Daisy, I am sure. I’ve been here more than three different times.”
Half an hour passed and there was still no sign of them. I could tell Kai was getting impatient, but he remained silent until nine thirty,
“They’re not coming,” he said finally, sitting up straight. “It’s been over an hour-”
Dad stumbled over his words, his cheeks turning red. “I don’t know what to tell you. They asked me to bring it today. Why wouldn’t they collect their money?”
Kai hummed. “Why indeed?”
