I’d been taught about heat, but only vaguely in school. I was told it was a way our wolves forced us to consummate our mating bonds, but I’d never been taught what it entailed

“You know about heat, right?” Scarlett asked and I shrugged. “What do they even teach you wolves?”

She muttered a few curses under her breath.

“It’s too late to go into details, but I’ll summarize. It is going to hurt… like hell. You are going to feel like your skin is burning from the inside out.”

“That’s very comforting,” I drawled, my voice thick with sarcasm

She gave me a sheepish shrug. “Your body is going to hurt, and most of all, your wolf is going to want to have sex. Your scent is going to become irresistible to any unmated male. I have to call Kai to make sure no one comes around here or we’ll have a bloodbath on our hands.”

“Scarlett?” I called out, but she wouldn’t turn to me. “Tell me. I deserve the truth.”

“Once your heat starts, the only thing that’s going to help is sex.

I must’ve had an expression on my face that worried her because she immediately backtracked.

“I know of one woman who handled her heat alone. She doesn’talk much about it, but it’s possible. I don’t want you to feel pressured to do anything. In fact, Kai’s presence alone might make it better. It’s just that I can’t say for certain if he’ll be able to control himself if-”

“Scarlett,” I cut her off and she hummed. “Get Kai, please.”

I hadn’t thought about the prospect of consummating the mating bond just yet, but what I did know was that I couldn’t do this alone. I trusted Kai, and I knew that he’d rather die than do something I wasn’t comfortable with, and for now… that was enough.

I dragged my aching, burning body into the bathroom and sat in the tub as it filled with cold water. Scarlett was right in the sense that it cooled my skin, but it did nothing to ease the pounding headache in my skull.

She walked into the bathroom about ten minutes after, when the water was beginning to turn warm I didn’t notice the bucket in her hands until she dumped the contents into the tub

Ice shot up my veins and I nearly leaped out of the tub, but herunds were him on my shoulders.

“Stay,” she ground out. “It’s going to help until Kat gets here.”

“Have you called him?” I asked and she nodded

“He’ll be here in about ten minutes.”

She rubbed small circles over my shoulders as I slowly sank back into water.

I don’t know what it looks like,” I admitted. “I was taught in theory, but in my pack, no one ever teaches you these things. Besides, it’s almost unheard of for a mated couple to go a week before consummating. It was never important.”

“You wolves are very archaic.”

I couldn’t help but laugh. “Tell me about it.”

She began to speak when I heard a door slam open downstairs. Excitement shot up my spine and my skin buzzed with anticipation. I opened my mouth but the words couldn’t come out. I knew as well as I knew my own name that it was Kai.

“I think I should leave now-” Scarlett began, but I grasped her hand tightly.

Mixed in with the excitement was nervousness. I had no idea how Kai would react to my heat, and to the fact that I was naked in the tub.

“Daisy-”

Whatever she wanted to say was quickly interrupted by the sound of the bathroom door slamming open.

Kai stood in the doorway, the first few buttons of his shirt undone, his hair standing up at the edges and his nostrils flaring. His eyes were much darker than usual, but it was clear he was still in control… or at least, holding onto the last shreds of it.

His eyes found me and I watched as he trailed his gaze over the ab. I clenched my thighs tightly, my skin heating up from the sheer intensity of his stare. It felt like he could see through the ice water and was staring right at me.

His hand gripped the door so tightly that his knuckles turned white.

“Scarlett.” His voice was hoarse and gruff. “Get out.”

She didn’t wait for another word, neither did she glance my way she just scurried out of the room as quickly as she could, leaving Kai and I alone. I fought the urge to wrap my arms around myself, but I knew it would only drag his attention to what I was trying to hide.
