Scarlett was already waiting for me with a tub of ice cream and vodka. She’d arranged it on the table like a feast and gestured for me to take a seat next to her.
“This conversation is going to gross me the fuck out because Kai is my cousin, but I’m willing to put all of that aside to be your confidante for today. What happened?”
I shrugged, grabbing a tub of ice cream. “I just felt this overwhelming urge to do it. There was no reason. I just… went for it.”
“I mean that’s normal. You’ve both been dancing around the mating bond for a while. It was bound to happen at some point. What’s the problem now? Did you not enjoy it?”
My cheeks flushed pink as memories from earlier flashed into my mind. “That’s not the problem.”
“Then what is?”
I shrugged. “I don’t know what happens next.”
She stared at me for a moment, as if trying to figure out if I was joking, then she laughed. It was such a loud and hearty sound, that it bounced off the walls. I tugged at the neckline of my shirt, feeling a little hot and self conscious.
“Oh, Daisy, you’re so sweet,” she mused. “There’s no rulebook on what to do next. You could jump his bones the moment he walks in through the door, or you can take it slow. What I do know is that Kai will follow whatever pace you set for him. There’s no rush, I promise.”
The entire conversation felt uncomfortable, or maybe it was just the heat in the room. I undid the buttons on my shirt and pulled it off, leaving me in just my camisole.
“I just don’t want to do it wrong.”
“You won’t,” she assured me placing a hand on my shoulder.
She pulled said hand back sharply, eyeing me warily.
“You’re a bit warm. Are you alright?”
I nodded. “I’m fine, maybe it’s because I just came in? I was under the sun after all.”
She didn’t seem convinced, but she also didn’t argue. She just leaned back into the couch, crossing her arms over my chest.
“Do wolves get sick?” she asked and I shook my head.
“Our immune system is top tier. There are certain things that ca plague us, but they’re very rare, and they mostly happen in older wolves. I’m in my prime.”
She hummed. “I’ll go turn on the air conditioner.”
A few minutes later, cool breeze was blowing through the room and the heat was forgotten, so was the conversation about my kiss with Kai.
Scarlett caught me up on some pack gossip, and after, we decide to watch a soap opera. We were having so much fun, until I began to feel a prickling heat at the base of my neck. I ignored at first, but it only got worse.
“Did the air conditioner go off?” I asked, causing Scarlett to turn me.
She shook her head. “It’s still normal, why?”

“I don’t know,” I admitted. “Maybe I am getting sick. I lost conta with my wolf when Lucas took me. For a moment, I was practically human, maybe I caught a bug?”
She didn’t seem convinced. “Maybe you should take a shower. I ear it helps. I’ll crank up the air conditioner as well.”
I dragged myself to my feet, briefly swaying as a wave of dizziness hit me. I heard Scarlett ask if I was okay but I waved her off. I was fine, I had to be.
I dragged myself up the stairs and took the coldest shower in the history of wolf-kind. The water was as cold as ice, and by the time I stepped out, I felt better, at least momentarily. I put on a camisole and shorts, hoping that the loose clothing would help soothe things.
The reprieve lasted all of ten minutes before that same crippling heat returned. It was then I began to wonder if something was truly wrong.
“I got you some cold water, maybe it-” Scarlett’s words died on her throat as she walked in on me standing directly in front of the fan. “Are you sure you’re alright?”
She made her way over to me, and when she placed a hand on my forehead, she cursed.
“You’re burning up, Daisy. What the hell is going on?”
“I don’t know,” I groaned.
“Maybe you should take a cold shower.”
“I just did.” I couldn’t hide the irritation in
my voice.
I was getting increasingly uncomfortable, and right now, she wasn’t offering any good advice. I knew it wasn’t her fault, but I couldn’t control how irritable I felt.
