After being fucked out of my mind last night, I imagined being woken up to soft kisses on my shoulder or breakfast in bed. What I didn’t imagine was hearing Kai’s agitated voice on the phone.

“What the fuck are you talking about?” he hissed out. “No, I can’

I sat up slowly, hands over my eyes to block the sunlight that was streaming directly into the room. I was sore everywhere. but that didn’t stop the smile that tugged at my lips. Kai stood by the window with his back to me. I could very easily make out the marks my nails had left all over his back.

My wolf purred within me, excited that she’d staked her claim on him.

“I can’t leave Daisy right now.”

My brows furrowed as I heard my name. I reached for Kai’s shirt on the floor. My movement must’ve caught his attention. because he turned around so fast, I barely had time to blink.

“I’ll call you later,” he said into the receiver before hanging up. “Good morning, princess, I didn’t mean to wake you.”

I waved him off. “It’s fine. What’s going on?”

His smile wavered for a moment but he shrugged. “Don’t worry about it. What do you want to eat this morning? I could make pancakes-”

“Don’t change the subject.”

He sighed deeply.

He ran his fingers through his hair in frustration before slowly making his way over to the bed. He sat at the edge, pulling my feet into his lap. The only thing shielding my naked body from his were the covers, and that wasn’t doing a lot at the moment but he didn’t seem to notice, his mind was clearly occupied with something else.

“I have to go to your old pack soon.”

Of all the things I expected to hear, that was not it. “Why?”

“Their Alpha should have died yesterday. If you hadn’t gone into heat, I would’ve killed him. They’ll know the minute he dies, and if I don’t move fast enough, they’ll recoup and name a new Alpha.”

“Most likely my dad.”

He nodded. “He’s going to try to get revenge, and they might cover up their dealings with the hunters.”

At the mention of the hunters, I remembered something that Lucas had told me. It must’ve skipped my mind with everything that happened.

“Lucas was the one working with the hunters, not my father.”

Kai opened his mouth to speak but I cut him off.

“He told me himself. I forgot to tell you but maybe you can get swers before you kill him.”

It was clear that he still had his own reservations, but he nodded. “Okay. I have to go into the office today. I really don’t want to leave you but-”

“I can go with you.”

He smiled softly. “Princess, I won’t be able to concentrate if you’re next to me.”

“A break once in a while can’t hurt anyone, right?” I teased.

His brows rose in amusement as he finally looked at me for the first time this morning. “I suppose you’re right.”

With a sharp tug, he pulled me towards him. sending the covers lying and kissed me.

We finally managed to leave the house over two hours later. I was dressed in a simple pair of jeans and one of his oversized hoodies. I was floored by how happy I was now that I wasn’t trying to fight the mating bond. I’d never felt so free.

As we arrived at the office, people bowed. I didn’t think much of it at first, he was the king after all, but it soon became clear that they weren’t just bowing to him, but to me too. Some people made a point of bowing twice, once to him, and once to

A hand shot out, pushing the front door open.

I turned to find Damien standing with a crooked grin. “No, but they can smell him all over you.”

My cheeks heated at his words. “Is it that obvious?”

“Of course it is,” he snorted. “Although I have to admit, wearing his hoodie was a nice touch. It threw people off a bit, but Kai also smells like you.”

I turned to my mate who just shrugged innocently. “I’m not hiding anything, princess.”

Sometimes I wished I could turn off my scent. It wasn’t that I was embarrassed about being with Kai, it was just that the attention was a bit overwhelming.

“Don’t worry about it, everyone will get used to it in a few days, Damien assured me.

He lifted his hand, as if to touch me, but decided against it at the last minute and shoved it into his pockets. Judging by the wary look he sent towards my mate, it was clear why he did it.

We headed through the lobby and Kai led me straight to the elevator. He’d just pushed the button when I heard a loud squeal coming from behind us.

“Kai!”

The voice was high pitched and nasally. I hadn’t even seen who belonged to but I was already irritated. I turned in time to see a flash of dark hair and sparkly clothes come flying past me.

I was all but shoved to the side and I would’ve fallen on my ass if Damien didn’t grab me by my arm and pull me to a standing position. The smell of strong floral perfume lingered in the air where she’d brushed past me.

Kai had barely turned to look at me when some girl was throwing her arms around his shoulders and pressing a kiss to his cheek.

“I missed you so much!” she exclaimed. “It’s been a while, did you miss me?”
