Chapter 53
Chapter 53
Eva’s perfume was sharp, making my nose twitch.

I hadn’t seen her in over a year. The last conversation we had didn’t end so well, she ran out of the pack house crying and disappeared that night. If I’d known she would be here today, I wouldn’t have brought Daisy.
It was clear my mate was uncomfortable by her presence. She eyed her warily, her hands crossed over her chest. Eva seemed oblivious to the discomfort, or maybe she just didn’t care, because she held out a hand to her.
“Who are you? You smell like a wolf. Are you a delegate from your pack?”
“Actually, she’s my mate,” I cut in.
I could’ve sworn I saw Eva’s eye twitch slightly. She blinked at Daisy in shock, her mouth forming an ‘o’
“Mate?” she asked and I hummed. “Well, it’s really nice to meet you.” She held out her hand to Daisy. “I didn’t know Kai had a mate. He hasn’t said a word about you.”
“Likewise,” Daisy drawled, taking Eva’s hand.
The tension in the lobby could be cut with a fucking knife, and I could feel the eyes of our pack members watching us closely. The last thing I wanted was to give them any fodder for the rumor mill.
“Damien why don’t you take Eva to the meeting rooms, I’ll be there in a minute-”
“Meeting room?” Eva scoffed. “I always wait in your office. When did that change?”
“I need to talk to Daisy.”
“Oh.” She cleared her throat. “Well then, don’t take too long, I guess.”
I didn’t wait to hear whatever else she had to say. With a firm hand at Daisy’s back, I led her towards the elevator. She didn’t fight me or say a word until the elevator doors closed. Only then did she step away from me until her back was pressed against the other end of the small box.
“I didn’t know you had any other friends outside of Damien,” she said quietly. “How long have you known her?”
“Since I was twelve.”
She laughed humorlessly. “And you never mentioned her once?”
“It never came up.”
She snorted. “Of course it didn’t.”
“Daisy-”
The elevator doors opened at that moment and she breezed past me, not waiting for me to explain. I murmured a curse under my breath before following her like a lost fucking puppy
My assistant didn’t bother trying to speak to us. She’d probably ready gotten the news of what happened downstairs.
I followed Daisy into my office and locked the door behind me. The last time Eva and I met, we had a minor disagreement. We haven’t spoken in over a year. I didn’t even think we were sti friends.”
“Why?” she asked and my brows furrowed in confusion. “Why did you fight? You can’t be friends with someone for years and just stop talking for nothing. What was the fight about?”

Our last conversation involved Eva’s dad coming to me with a poposal. He wanted his daughter and I to mate seeing as neither of us had found our fated mates. It was a logical choice, he that anyone in my position would have taken, but I never saw Eva as anything more than a friend so I refused.
She was insulted by my decision and ripped me a new one in my office. In fact, she stood right in front of my desk where Daisy was standing right now. She’d screamed at me for five minutes straight before trying to kiss me. I’d pushed her off and barely got a glimpse of the horror in her eyes before she ran away.
I tried reaching out after but I never could get across to her.
“I’m waiting for an answer, Kai,” Daisy snapped.
With a heavy exhale, I told her the truth. She listened intently, her frown deepening with each word I spoke. By the time I was done, she was silent.
“Say something,” I pleaded.
“What do you want me to say? It’s obvious she wants you.”
“Daisy-”
“She threw herself on you and kissed you.”
“My cheek,” I corrected and she shot me a harsh glare. “Sorry.”
“Don’t apologize to me. I don’t like her.”
Her hands were crossed over her chest and her lips were set into a firm line. Her brows were taut and her eyes sharp.
Jealousy was a fucking gorgeous look on her.
I crossed the length of the room, standing directly in front of he. She tried to avoid my eyes, but I gripped her chin, tilting her head back until she was staring at me.
“It doesn’t matter what she wants because I want you,” I whispered. “Eva would never try anything. Lycans respect mating bond.”
Her frown didn’t let up.

“I promise you, nothing is going to happen. You’re the only one want, Daisy, okay?” I kissed her lips softly and despite trying not to, her mouth tugged up into a small smile.
