Chapter 66

The crowd slowly dissipated after almost two hours of questions and answers.

I couldn’t remember the last time I spent that long speaking to people. I never had to do it with my pack because there was already a sense of loyalty. With the wolves, it was harder. They didn’t like me, and they didn’t trust me even more, but by the end of the meeting, we seemed to have come to a mutual agreement.

“Where is she?” I asked one of the guards as soon as I stepped off the podium.

I didn’t need to clarify, they just pointed me in the direction of the car where Daisy sat.

I headed over, the sound of her laughter pulling me in.

She was seated with Damien who laughed alongside her. As soon as he saw me, he straightened, the corner of his lips hiding a mischievous smile.

Daisy turned, her eyes locking with mine. “Hi, Kai.”

She was trying and failing to hide her smile.

“Are you telling embarrassing stories about me, Damien?”

He held up his hands in mock surrender. “I can neither confirm or deny that statement.”

I shook my head, fighting a smile of my own. I’d let him tell a thousand stories if it meant that I’d get to hear Daisy laugh like that.

“I need to speak with my mate.”

The words were barely out of my mouth before he got out of the car. He tipped his head to Daisy before disappearing to find the other guards. I got into the driver’s seat and glanced at her.

The air grew thick as silence filled the small space. She chewed on the inside of her cheek, twiddling her thumbs in her lap. Her little stint from earlier hung between us, but neither of us wanted to address it first.

I started the car and began the drive back to the pack house in silence.

We’d gone half the way when she finally spoke.

“Can we just address this?” she asked. “The silence is driving me razy.”

“Address what? The fact that you put yourself in front of an angry crowd without warning?”

“I did it for you, and even you can’t be too prideful to admit it.”

I raised a brow at her words. “Is that so?”

“Yes” She crossed her arms over her chest. “It was going terribly nd you know it.”

I did know it.

Which was why I wasn’t pissed at her.

Was I upset that she was in harm’s way? Yes, but she did what she thought was right, and I’d never hold that against her. However, I hated the fact that I was blindsided by it. If anything were to happen. I may not have been able to protect her as

best as I wanted.

“Say something.” she snapped.

“Thank you.”

“You can’t be upset because I-wait, what?”

“Do you want me to repeat it?”

“No, I just,” she stumbled over her words. “I wasn’t expecting gratitude. I thought you’d yell at me.”

“Have I ever yelled at you?”

She shook her head. “No, but, I disobeyed you.”

At that, I pulled the car to a stop on the side of the road.

The road was deserted, save for the guards that were driving behind us. They stopped a good distance from us so I wasn’t bothered about them overhearing us, and even if they did… I didn’t care.

“You’re not a dog who lives to obey my every word, princess, for fucks sake.” I ran my hands through my hair with a sigh. “If I wanted someone obedient to my whims, I would have gotten that.”

Her brows furrowed. “I’m not sure if that’s a compliment or-”

“It’s fact, Daisy.” I turned to face her. “Was I happy that you did i In the moment, no, but I’m not an ass, I know when I need help, and you helped me. We’re a team, you and I, so thank you.”

For a full minute, she just sat there staring at me, not knowing what to say. I waited patiently for her to gather her thoughts and when she finally did, all that came out was a small ‘oh’

The corner of my lips quirked. “Yes, oh.”

“So what now?” she asked. “You rule the pack from here? Are we moving?”

“No, princess, we aren’t. I’ll have to stay here for a while and set up a system that works. My home is with you back at the palace.”

“So you just leave them alone? I don’t know if they’ll like that.”

I’d already thought about all that. “I’ll have a representative of the crown here to keep an eye on things, and I’ll show up once in a while.”

“Any idea who that representative is?”

“I wanted it to be Damien, but I think he’ll cause more trouble.”

She snorted. “He definitely will. He hates everyone here.”

“I do too. I’ll never forgive them for how they treated you.”

She sighed at my words but didn’t bother trying to convince me otherwise. I may be able to compartmentalize my distaste for them, but that didn’t mean it was gone. If it were up to me,

That was the only reason I was here.

leave the pack in utter ruins, but I knew it would hurt her.

“Well then, it’s a good thing I’m here to keep you in line,” she sa finally
