I could feel their watchful and distrustful gazes as they looked between Kai and I. It was clear to everyone that we were mates. My mark was clearly displayed on my neck and Kai had a protective hand on the small of my back, ready to pull me away if need be.

“A lot of you may have seen me around the pack.”

“That’s not where we know you from!” someone yelled out from the back.

I could feel Kai seething next to me, but I took his hand in mine and squeezed tightly.

I ignored the jab and continued speaking.

“Others may know me from…” I swallowed deeply before continuing, “a certain video that went around a few months ago. I’ll admit, it wasn’t one of my finest moments, then again, it’s hard to have a fine moment when you don’t even know that you’re being recorded.”

No one spoke.

I waited for the jabs, for the insults, but surprisingly, they were restraining themselves.

“I could stand here and talk shit about Lucas, and I would be well within my rights to do so. He did a lot of shitty things to me, but I won’t, because that won’t help my cause. He was good to most of you, or at least… decent enough, and that’s fine. I know you hate the lycans. You think they’re blood thirsty plunderers, I was taught the same thing.

We were taught that they kill on sight but that can’t be true because I’m standing right here and that’s only possible because of Kai. When I was unfairly thrown out, he found me, and he took me in. His entire pack cared for me like one of their own. They’re not the monsters we think they are.”

“He’s your mate!” a woman’s voice yelled out. “Of course he’ll be kind to you. He didn’t show our Alpha that same kindness.”

“Because your Alpha broke into our territory and tried to have me kidnapped. You may have blind loyalty to Lucas but even you know that the punishment for taking another Alpha’s mate death.”

“You betrayed the pack by leaving and settling with the lycans,” she accused. “That was treason.”

“I didn’t leave, I was thrown out of here. We van argue about the semantics of treason, but it was wrong for him to try to have me kidnapped from my mate’s home.”

There were murmurs in the crowd, but even they could disagree with that logic. If someone had come in here and tried to take Lucas’ mate, the pack would’ve been in an uproar.

“I’m not asking you to love Kai, I’m not even asking you to like him, but he is your king. He has kept our entire kingdom safe for years now, and he will take care of the pack if you let him. He’s not here to do you harm.”

“So is he going to be our new Alpha or is he going to get someone else to rule us?”

This time, the person speaking stepped out of the crowd. I recognized her from school. She looked different now, her auburn hair had grown out a bit more, and her freckles looked rker. There was a slight swell to her stomach. letting me know she was pregnant.

I glanced over at Kai, stepping aside for him to answer the question.

I’d done my part in trying to calm and appease them, it was his to convince them.

“I will be ruling the pack for the time being,” he explained. “If I do find someone worthy enough to be the next Alpha, then I will hand over to them if that what you all decide.”

She looked surprised by his answer. “You’re not making the decision for us?”

He shook his head. “I could, but it would be counterproductive considering you all have your bias against me. Make no mistake about it, I could enforce my way, and there is nothing that will happen, but it is my desire that we get along well for my mate’s sake.”

“So what, if it wasn’t for her you wouldn’t care?” a man asked.

“Yes.” Kai didn’t even bother to deny it. “Considering how you all have treated her, it is only expected.”

“Kai,” I hissed out, pinching the skin on his wrist.

He was supposed to appease them, not antagonize them.

He ignored me and continued speaking. “Daisy has painted me in a good light, but let it be known, I have never claimed to be a good man, and I don’t tolerate disrespect, especially not towards my mate. I will take care of this pack to the best of my abilities, but I will not coddle anyone.”

I held my breath after his speech, waiting for the outrage, but it never came. The people were not fans of him, that much was obvious, but no one dared say a thing. Perhaps it was residual fear, I was just glad that there was no uproar.

“If you have any questions about how this arrangement will work, feel free to ask,” Kai continued.

There were a few shaky hands.

As he addressed them, Damien walked over to me, grabbing the corner of my elbow. “Come on, your job there is done.”

I allowed him lead me away towards the back of the podium.
