Chapter 68
Chapter 68
Dad’s face turned beet red in shame. “You have no right to speak on my daughter and 1-”
“I have every right to speak about what you did to my mate. You should be lucky that I even let you live.”

He brushed past me and leaned forward to whisper something to my dad. His voice was so low that I couldn’t hear but I watched as the color bled out of dad’s cheeks and true, undiluted fear flashed across his face.
No words were exchanged after that, dad just turned on his heels and walked away without another word.
“What did you tell him?” I asked, but Kai just shrugged. “Kai, tell me-”
“It doesn’t matter,” he assured me, running a hand down my arm softly. “Let’s get you on the road before it’s too late.”
He helped me into the car and kissed me deeply. There was something foreign in his eyes, something that told me he had a lot to say, but for some reason, he chose silence. He just kissed me once again before turning to the guard.
“Get her home safe,” he said before stepping back.
He stood in the driveway, watching until the car was out of sight
The ride home was slow and uneventful. I tried making conversation with the guards, but Kai must have instilled the fear of the goddess in them because they wouldn’t speak more than a few words to me.
I settled for the snacks that Kai left in the back seat for me. I ate in silence, then spent the rest of the drive trying to imagine what Kai was doing at the moment. By the time we got back to the pack, the sun was already beginning to set.
I wasn’t sure if it was because I was alone or we drove slower, but the drive seemed to take much longer than the last one did. I was exhausted and wanted nothing more than to lower myself into a tub and soak.
Just as Kai said, Scarlett was waiting at the front door for me. As soon as the car pulled to a stop, she rushed over to my side and pulled me into a hug.
“I missed you,” she mumbled into my hair. “Don’t ever let my cousin take you away from me again.”
I laughed. “I don’t think it works that way.”
“It better work, it was torture without you here. I made dinner for us, come on.”
She tugged me in without another word. The guards carried my bag into the living room and placed them by the door. Scarlett dragged them the rest of the way up the stairs despite me telling her I could do it myself. She just ushered me into
the shower.
I obliged, quickly realizing that I couldn’t fight her, and I needed the soak anyway.
I filled the tub with steaming hot water and lowered myself into, sighing as the heat seeped into my bones. Once I was relazed, I grabbed my phone and called Kai.
He picked up on the second ring “Hi, princess, are you settling okay?”
I hummed. “How are things over there?”
“Shit. The council is completely useless. I want to change them. I can’t”
“Why not?”
“If I change too much too soon, Irisk upsetting the pack It’s too arly for that.”

“That sounds horrible.”
“I’ll deal with it.” I yawned and Kai chuckled. “You should rest, princess.”
“I’m not that tired, 1-”
Another yawn interrupted me and this time, Kai burst out laughing.
“I’ll talk to you tomorrow, princess, go to bed, okay?”
“Okay,” I mumbled in resignation. “Goodnight.”
He echoed my words before hanging up.

I dragged myself out of the tub because I realized I was one wrong move away from falling asleep in there. I dressed in one of Kai’s oversized shirts. It reached the middle of my thighs so I didn’t bother with anything but underwear.
Scarlett was waiting for me in the living room, a bowl of pasta in front of her. “Eat.”
“I’m so tired.”
“I know, but Kai told me you haven’t had a proper meal all day eat.”
Of course Kai was still looking out for me all the way from another pack. I took the bowl from her and was heading towards the couch when I heard a knock on the front door.
I turned to her, brows raised. “Are you expecting anyone?”
She shook her head. “Stay here.”
By now, she should’ve realized I was terrible with instructions because I followed closely behind her. She shot me a scolding look, but when I didn’t relent, she threw her hands up in surrender and let me follow her.
She pulled the door open and her look of surprise echoed exactly how I felt when I saw who was on the other side.
“Hi,” Eva waved, a smile on her face. “Can I come in?”
I glanced over at Scarlett only to find her already looking at me. Neither of us spoke, but Eva didn’t care because she brushed past us and made our way into the house.
“I can’t believe I haven’t been here since Kai’s mother died. He’s so protective over this house.” She turned to me. “You look exhausted, Daisy, you should consider some concealer for your under eyes-is that pasta? Is there more?”
“Sorry but what exactly are you doing here?” I cut her off, suddenly feeling overwhelmed.
I wanted to rest, the last thing I expected was for my mate’s friend to show up in our house unannounced and act like she owned the place.
“I heard you were back. I figured we didn’t have enough time to get to know each other before you left.”
She walked into the living room and sat on the couch, her hands folded neatly in her lap.
“You didn’t think to come tomorrow?” I asked, unable to keep the annoyance out of my voice.
“I thought a sleepover would be best for us to get to know each her.” She smiled widely “So, where do I sleep?”
