I watched the wolf head being taken away in the back of a car, an unfamiliar ache budding in my chest. We couldn’t bury him, not until we were able to identify him. His family deserved closure.
In all my time as king, I’d never had a war. I grew up seeing my father’s ego and pride get in the way of being a good ruler. I watched him get into random fights for the worst reasons, and I watched people hate him because of the lives they lost.
I promised myself that I would never go into a war unless it was necessary. I never wanted my people to lose their lives for nothing, and yet, that’s exactly what I was about to do.
It was incredibly difficult being both king and Alpha. As the king, I had a duty to the entire werewolf kingdom, and that included the Northern pack. As king, I couldn’t just abandon them to the whims of the hunters, it was my job to look out for
them.
However, as Alpha, I wanted to do everything possible to make sure that my pack was safe. My instincts as Alpha told me to damn the Northern pack and let them all rot.
“What are you going to do?” my lycan asked but for once, I couldn’t answer. “They’ll attack again.”
“I know.”
“You need to retaliate. You need to show them that you aren’t weak.”
“How do I retaliate against an enemy that I don’t even know? I have never met him face to face. I don’t even know where he stays.”
“Easy, you find him.”
I held back a snort.
It was easy for my lycan to say that. He was pure animal. He had a one track mind when it came to most things and unfortunately, at a time like this, he couldn’t understand the intricacies of the situation.
I waited until the stone was scrubbed clean before heading back to the pack office.
I sent a text to Scarlett, making sure that Daisy was okay. It wasn’t until her response came in that I was finally able to breathe. Despite everything going on right now, Daisy was still my number one priority. We had a mating ceremony in a week, and until then, I had to rely on other people to keep an eye on her.
My father always used to tell me that love was an inconvenience that an Alpha couldn’t afford, and I’d never truly understood it until now. I couldn’t concentrate properly until I knew she was safe. I couldn’t even take care of my own pack properly.
I pushed the thought to the back of my head and dialed Damien. He picked up immediately,
“I just heard,” he said, not even bothering with pleasantries. “Do you know who it is yet?”
“No, but the guards are going through the towns and trying to find out if anyone is missing. Have you found anything that can help us?”
“I have combed through everything that belonged to that bastard and his father. There is nothing that remotely links the hunters to this pack.”
I ran my fingers through my hair in frustration. “There has to be something, or else it doesn’t make any sense. They can’t just be asking for that pack for no reason.”
“Maybe it’s a distraction?” he suggested. “Maybe they want it because of its proximity to somewhere else.”

I shook my head. “It can’t be that. The Northern pack is surrounded by barren land to the left and human lands to the North. They don’t have many natural resources either. All they had going for them was a good military system.”
The door to my office opened right as I was speaking, and I watched as Daisy walked in, her hands wrapped around her torso tightly.
Scarlett was nowhere to be seen but before I could say anything about that, Daisy took the seat in front of my desk.
“I’m going to call him.”
I already knew who him was. “No fucking chance.”
“I overheard your conversation, you didn’t lock the door properly. You have nothing. If we want to figure out a way out of this mess, this is what we need to do.”
We can’t even if we wanted to. He called with a private number.”
“Not with me.” She took out her phone and placed it on the table. “I already asked Scarlett to try and trace it, but she said she won’t be able to unless we call him first. She’s outside right now, I just need you to agree to this.”
A refusal was at the tip of my tongue.
This man had already proven to us that he was dangerous. The last thing I wanted was for her to speak to him again. If it were up to me, I’d cart her off to the other side of the world where I know I wouldn’t have to worry about her getting hurt. However, I knew that if I even suggested it, Daisy would never forgive me.
“What if the number doesn’t connect anymore?” I asked. “Maybe it was an accident that he didn’t block the number before calling.”
She shook her head. “I don’t think so. For someone who has spent his whole life hiding from us, it had to have been deliberate. I think he’s smarter than we give him credit for.”
“Maybe you give him too much credit.”
She shrugged. “There’s only one way to find out.”
