I pulled my-well, Kai’s-sweater tighter around me as we got out of the car.

My mate was at my side in an instant. His hand resting on the small of my back as he guided me towards the border where the guards were gathered. There were about four of them, rallied around a tree.
As we got closer, the metallic scent of blood hit me so fiercely that I had to stop and take a breath. Nausea rolled up my spine and I grabbed onto Kai’s arm tightly, trying to get fresh air into my nose that didn’t remind me of a butcher’s shop.
Kai turned to me, eyes filled with worry. “Are you alright?”
I nodded. “I’m fine, I just… that caught me off guard.”
*Do you want to wait in the car? I can deal with this.”
I shook my head. If I was going to be Luna, then I had to put my comfort aside and deal with this. He kissed my temple softly, waiting until I’d become used to the scent before we kept walking.
The guards parted ways for us and I saw the blood before I saw what caused it.
With every pack, there was a certain demarcation that marked the beginning and end of a boundary. It was usually a tree or
large rock or monument, but it always had the insignia of the pack on it in a very large and visible manner so people wouldn’t accidentally stumble into the pack.
For this pack, there was a large rock and on it was the royal insignia etched into the stone. There was even a flag there.
Right in front of that rock was the severed head of a werewolf. The eyes were wide and bloodshot, and the tongue stuck out. The wolf was grey, and judging by the size, it would’ve been someone in their mid to late twenties. The wolf features were still a bit young, but not young enough to be juvenile.
I swallowed back the bile that crawled up my throat and forced my eyes away from the wolf head and the flies that were beginning to swarm it.
Whoever put the head there was deliberate about the placement. It was just outside the packs borders. One more inch and they would’ve put it right in our territory. It was a sigh… a taunt.
“Do we know who that is?” I asked. My voice was surprisingly firm, but anyone who listened closely would’ve heard the crack on the end.
“No, Luna,” one of the guards answered. “We’re trying to account for everyone in the towns but it will take a while.”
My eyes found the wolf’s again and I knew that it would take a while to get those wide, lifeless eyes out of my mind at night. It would haunt me for the rest of my life.
“Hey,” Kai’s soft voice cut me out of my thoughts as he stepped into my line of sight. “You don’t need to look at it.”
“I know, I just…” I trailed off, not knowing what to say.
“Clean it up,” Kai instructed the guards. “We may not have the body but we can bury the head.”
The guards sprung into action immediately, and Kai gently ran his hands down my shoulders in a soft and calming gesture. He urged me to turn, and I did so obediently, not even trying to refuse. We’d only taken three steps when someone called
out to us.
“Alpha! Luna! There’s something else.”
“Go,” Kai whispered to me. “I’ll check it out.”

I snorted. “Like hell.”
I followed him back towards the head, and this time, we crossed the boundary out into the neutral ground. We followed the guards to the other side of the stone boundary and my eyes widened in shock when I saw what had been done to it.
Whoever was behind this had chosen to leave a message, both literally and figuratively. They’d written in blood, right atop the royal insignia. It was just two words, but the message was clear: tick tock.
Kai’s jaw clenched in anger and frustration. “Clean it up.”
“Yes sir.”
“Scarlett, take Daisy back home. I won’t be joining you for a while.”
I opened my mouth to ask why, but Scarlett grabbed my arm and shook her head slightly. Even though I disagreed, I forced my lips shut and followed her towards the car. I glanced back at my mate, but he was already lost in the midst of the guards.
“You know what that’s about,” Scarlett said to me as soon as we got into the car.
I turned to face her, my brows furrowing. “What?”
“I was watching you out there. You looked disgusted, but not surprised. You know something, and Kai does too. What is it?”
