I sipped my ice tea, letting the coolness settle deep in my stomach.

It was exactly what I needed on a cold and stressful day like this, and Scarlett seemed to agree because she got the exact same thing along with a muffin.
“I’m going to get some more muffins to take home,” she said to me. “Are you good on your own?”
I nodded, waving her off. “I’ll be fine, you go.”
She walked into the store, leaving me on the chair outside. People walked past, and I was grateful that the few who stopped didn’t try to disturb my day, they just bowed a little, some waved but they all ultimately went on their way.
I took another sip of my coffee when the chair opposite me was pulled back and someone who wasn’t Scarlett lowered themselves into the seat.
“Hey, Daisy!” Eva said, her voice chirpy and upbeat. “You are a hard woman to come by.”
I resisted the urge to pinch my forehead in frustration and just gave her a small smile. “I’ve been a bit busy.”
“It’s okay, I know you’re ignoring me.” she waved it off like it was no big deal. “To be fair, I’d ignore me too if I were you. I wouldn’t want anything to do with my mate’s ex-”
“The two of you didn’t date, Eva,” I snapped, unable to keep the annoyance out of my voice. “I spoke to Kai. He said you only had sex once. I don’t appreciate you lying to me about your relationship with my mate.”
She fell silent, her cheeks turning a bright shade of red. To her credit, she looked a bit uncomfortable as she shuffled in her chair, her hands clasped together in front of her.
She opened her mouth to speak, but I cut her off.
“I don’t know what game you’re playing at, but there is too much going on in my life for me to spend time on it. Kai and I are mated now, and I am sorry if you don’t like that, but there is nothing that can be done. I would appreciate it if you stopped pretending to be my friend just to feed me lies about him.”
By the time I was done, I was breathing heavily. I’d spoken in one breath, eager to get it all out.
For a long minute, she said nothing, she wouldn’t even look at me. Finally, she lifted her eyes and they were brimming with
tears.
“I’m so sorry, Daisy. You’re right, I was jealous and I lied, but I regretted it right away. You can ask Kai, I called him and apologized for what I did. I was too embarrassed to call you. I was used to being the only woman around him. I didn’t know how to act with you. I know it isn’t an excuse.”
She reached out for me, taking my hand in hers.
“I truly am sorry. It’s alright if you don’t believe me and never want to see me again, but I would really like for us to be friends. I think we will get along very well if we put this whole Kai thing aside.”
I swallowed deeply, pulling my hands away from hers. “I don’t know about friends, Eva. I’m not comfortable with that right.
now.”
Her smile faltered. “That’s completely my fault, and I understand. I won’t stop trying to make it up to you though. You’re a great woman, and Kai is lucky to have you.”
She gave me a small smile, before rising to her feet.

She walked away without another word, and I watched her go. Once she was out of reach, I took a bite from the muffin in front of me, licking the crumbs that fell on my fingers.
I still wasn’t fully convinced about Eva. She confused me more each time I saw her, but she wasn’t high on my priority list.
“I’m back,” Scarlett sing-songed, waving a paper bag in front of me. “Are you ready to go?”
I hummed, choosing not to tell her about the Eva debacle. “I am.”
She stayed with me very late into the night.
Kai sent me hourly updates, letting me know he was fine. He hadn’t found anything by the pack house, and he wanted to check our house, but it was getting too dark to check.
He didn’t agree at first, and we spent almost ten minutes arguing on the phone before he sighed and told me he would be on his
way back soon. As soon as I told Scarlett, she bid me goodbye, telling me she didn’t want to be anywhere near the house when Kai returned.
I laughed at her, but locked the door behind her.
I was in the middle of taking a long shower for bed when I heard the door open.
I felt Kai before I saw him. I felt his piercing stare on me and heard his soft breathing on the other side of the glass.
“Are you going to keep standing there or are you going to come in?” I asked.
He didn’t respond, but I heard the shower door slide open, and I felt him step up behind me. I nearly jumped when a warm hand touched my hip and his lips landed softly on my neck, right above his mark.
