Chapter 85
Chapter 85
Daisy was sleeping peacefully when I woke up with a start.

Sweat drenched my clothes and beaded my brow, my heart hammered in my chest as the remnants of my bad dream faded. from my memory.
I reached out for my sleeping mate, taking a strand of her hair between my fingertips. I watched her chest rise and fall softly, and inhaled her soft scent to remind me that she was alive, and she was safe.
The last time I had a nightmare, I was a scrawny ten year old boy who was scared of the monster that shared a house with my mother and I. I’d wake up in sweats every night with vivid memories of the things he did to us.
One night, he heard me screaming from my sleep. He walked into my room and found my mother comforting me. He Whipped me until I bled, and I quickly realized that the true monsters were in our reality, not in dreams. I hadn’t feared the night since then. However, things had changed.
Having a mate threatened to shatter the careful coolness I’d built over the years. Now, my worst fear wasn’t being hurt, no, my worst fear was seeing something terrible happen to her. I could still see her mangled, bleeding body like I had in my dream-
“No!” my lycan snapped, voice hard and angry. “We won’t think about that, we can’t. We have to put an end to this.”
For once, we were on the same page.
Pressing a soft kiss to her forehead, I left her in bed and grabbed a jacket. I headed out into the cool morning, taking the map with me.
I went into the woods next to our house and followed the sound of rushing water deeper into the trees. I had a feeling this was the house in the map, but I hoped I was wrong because this was more personal, this was closer to Daisy. As an Alpha, it was wrong of me, it was my job to put the pack first, but I didn’t care.
I found the stream easily and followed the path downstream just like the map said. It took me almost twenty minutes of walking to get to a large rock that resembled the one on the map. It was weirdly misshapen, with a jagged top, and if that wasn’t signal enough, there was a large X spray painted on the floor in front of it.
The sun was already rising, Daisy was probably awake by now.
I headed for the rock and began to dig.
I didn’t have to dig far before the smell hit my nose sharply. It smelled like old, rotten corpse. With one hand over my nose, I continued to dig, until I uncovered the severed paw. It was small, if it belonged to the wolf we found earlier, then we’d gotten the age wrong because the owner of this paw couldn’t be older than twenty.
With a sigh, I covered the earth, leaving the paw in the ground.
He’d tortured the boy before he killed him. Judging by the blood in that shallow grave, the paw was cut off while the boy was
still alive.
I let out a frustrated scream that shook the trees.
The entire forest went silent, joining in my mourning for a life that hadn’t even been lived, a life that was snuffed out by careless violence. I’d grossly underestimated our opponent. He had no sympathy, and men like him were the scariest to face
in battle.
“I need the pack under constant surveillance,” I told Scarlett down the mind link. “Implement a curfew too. No one should
be out after dark.”

“What happened?” she asked. “Did you find what was at the end of the map?”

“Yes, it was a body part. He’s toying with us, he wants us to know what he is capable of. I need to make sure my people are
safe.”
“Of course, but Kai, they’ll want to know why. What do you want me to tell them?”
“The truth. Tell them there is an enemy and they need to be on guard.”
“Are you sure?” she questioned softly. “It might incite panic.”
I’d never lied to my pack before.
I swore to myself the moment I became Alpha and King that I would be a better leader than my father, that I would be honest and true, and that I would do everything right.
“Yes,” I said softly. “Just do it.”
I spent a few extra minutes at the stream, gathering my thoughts.
By the time I started heading back to the house, it was already well into the morning. I was shocked that Daisy hadn’t tried to mind link me yet. I knew she had to be awake by now.
I walked into the house and was immediately greeted by the smell of grease and eggs. I followed it into the kitchen where Daisy was in front of the counter, humming to herself as she plated pancakes.
“How nice of you to finally come back home,” she drawled, not even bothering to look up at me. “You smell like dirt, a shower.”
