Chapter 1
I had grown up abroad.
My mother, terrified that I might bring home a foreign son-in-law, arranged for me to be engaged to a handsome and accomplished man back in Asteria City.
So, I returned to get engaged.
I was at a high-end boutique, browsing engagement dresses.
I had just picked out a strapless ivory gown and was about to try it on when a woman nearby glanced at the dress in my
nands and told the clerk, This dress is pretty unique. Bring it over-I want to try it.”
The clerk immediately snatched the dress from my hands without a word.
Fuming. I protested, “Shouldn’t there be something called first come, first served? I picked that dress out first. Aren’t
:here any rules here?”
But the woman scoffed at me. This dress costs 188,000 dollars. You think a broke girl like you can afford it?”
Then she raised her chin proudly. “I’m the god-sister of Mason Cruz, CEO of Cruz Group. In Asteria City, the Cruz family
decides what counts as ‘reasonable.””
Well, wasn’t that something. Mason Cruz-wasn’t he the very man I was supposed to be engaged to?
pulled out my phone and called him. “Your god-sister just stole my engagement dress. Care to explain?”
just hearing the words god-sister already made me feel uneasy. If Mason couldn’t give me a decent

sation today.
To my surprise, his voice on the other end was cold and distant: “Who are you? Since when is my relationship with
Aubrey any of your business?”
I was about to tell him I was his fiancée, but he hung up before I could finish.
I was furious. So Mason hadn’t even saved my number?
Meanwhile, Aubrey Monroe was grinning smugly beside me. ‘Bitch, did you really think just having Mason’s number
would mean anything? Dream on.”
Her eyes scanned me with open disdain. “Even the janitors at Cruz Group dress better than you
I had always dressed for comfort, not to impress, but I never imagined that my simple style would one day be used
against me.
“What era do you think we’re living in? Judging people by appearances-how shallow can you be? Mason must be blind to call you his god-sister.”
Chapter 1
Thanks to her disruption. I had lost all interest in trying the dress on.
So I grabbed it and headed straight to the checkout.
The clerk hesitated and said nervously. I’m sorry, miss. We usually prioritize our members first.”
Aubrey burst out laughing, clearly relishing the moment. She pulled a shiny gold membership card from her purse and
slapped it on the counter.
This is a million-dollars membership card. What are you even doing here, pretending you belong?”
I wasn’t usually one to argue with others, but today Aubrey had really pushed me too far.
I took out a black card and handed it to the clerk, trying to keep my voice calm. “Make me a member. And wrap the
dress.”
