Chapter 9
Heat rushed to my cheeks as Brook reached up, his tiny fingers tangling in the dark blue curls that fell across Caspian’s
forehead.
After days of rough travel, Silverwood finally came into view, spreading across the northern highlands.
Caspian and Brook needed to stay near water, so I left them by a stream just outside the village and headed for the clan
gates on my own.
I didn’t recognize the young shifter at the gate, and he eyed my Tideborn clothes with obvious suspicion, already opening
his mouth to question me.
An older shifter appeared at the noise, and his face went blank with shock.
“Elara? Is that you?” His shout drew a small crowd.
“That’s really her,” someone murmured.
“Didn’t she leave for the Tideborn? Something about her is different.”
I nodded at them and walked toward my father’s house. Father must have heard because he came rushing out before I
even reached the door, His eyes glazed over with tears.
“Elara? My girl, is it really you?”
I ran to him, and we held each other tight. He felt smaller than I remembered, frailer, but his arms er just as strong

every detail.
“Were they good to you? Were they kind?”
I took his hand and led him inside.
“I have a mate now. His name is Caspian-he’s a Tideborn warrior. And we have a son, Dad. A beautiful little boy”
Father’s whole face lit up.
“A grandson? Where is he? I want to meet him!”
They’re just outside the village. Caspian and Brook need to stay close to water, so I left them by the stream.”
I glanced around the familiar room.
“How have you been holding up?”
His smile dimmed.

Gale…
His voice dropped. That boy’s a shell of who he used to be.”
Hearing their names didn’t sting the way I thought it might. If anything. I felt oddly detached, like they belonged to someone else’s past.
I wanted to ask what happened with the woman they’d chosen, why things had gone so wrong, but a voice from outside cut through the moment.
“Chief! Is it true? Is Elara really back?”
