[Jake’s POV]
The hills of Coloane were a different world.
Down in the peninsula, Macau was all neon and exhaust and people stacked on top of each other. Up here, the air was cool. It smelled like pine and wet dirt. The road wound up the mountain in slow curves, and the city lights below looked small.
I sat in the passenger seat of a black sedan that cost nothing and drew no attention. Ethan was driving. He was tapping his fingers on the wheel. Fast. Nervous.
Through the trees, you could just see it. A ten-foot stone wall. Gray. Old. Wrapped around a whole hillside.
That was Mei-Ling Zhao’s estate.
"Overwatch, talk to me," I murmured. I adjusted the collar of my suit. The fabric was stiff. Dark. Meant to disappear in shadow.
"I’m in," Nia said in my ear. Her voice was crisp. "Estate security grid is high-end commercial. Motion sensors on the wall. Thermal cameras sweeping the grounds every 12 seconds. Biometric locks on all exterior doors. She runs a private detail. Eight men. Licensed. Rotating patrols every 20 minutes."
"Triad?" Ethan asked. He slowed the car as we passed the iron gates a hundred yards up. Two guards stood there. They weren’t looking at us.
"Negative," Claire cut in. "Private security firm. Clean records. Mei-Ling keeps Zhao’s street soldiers off the property on purpose. She runs the Crimson Triad’s legitimate real estate. Billions in commercial towers, condos, hotels. She built a wall between that and Zhao’s human trafficking."
"That wall is about to crack," I said. I checked the dash clock. 10:42 PM.
"Cho hit Zhao’s main warehouse last night," I continued. "Two million in inventory gone. A dozen men arrested. Zhao’s bleeding cash. He can’t go to the other Dragons for money. He can’t rebuild his routes without it. He’s going to come to his wife and demand she liquidate assets to fund him."
"You think he’ll come tonight?" Ethan asked.
"Desperate men don’t wait," I said. "But I’m not waiting either. I need to talk to her before he gets here."
"I can loop the west wall thermals," Nia offered. "Three minute window. No alarms, no footage. You can scale and cross the lawn clean."
"Do it," I said.
I opened the door. The mountain air hit my face. Cold. It smelled like rain was coming.
"Keep the engine running," I told Ethan. "If SUVs come up this road, you call it. Don’t wait."
"Got you," Ethan said. He rolled the window down an inch.
I moved into the tree line. The ground was soft under my shoes. Leaves. Dirt. The dark suit swallowed me.
The wall was close now. Rough stone. Ten feet.
"Cameras are looped," Nia said. "You’re clear."
I didn’t run. I walked to the wall, took three steps, planted my foot, and vaulted. My fingers caught the top edge. Cold stone. I pulled myself over and dropped onto grass on the other side.
Silent.
The grounds were perfect. Too perfect. A stone path curved through a zen garden. Koi pond. Water was black and still. Bonsai trees trimmed like sculptures. The main house sat ahead. Glass and dark wood. It looked like it grew out of the hill.
I moved low. Used the landscaping. A fountain. A hedge. A statue.
Two guards came around the east corner. Flashlights. They were talking. Bored. Their beams swept the lawn in slow arcs. Predictable.
I waited behind a large bonsai until they passed. The smell of cut grass was strong.
The rear patio had heavy glass doors. Inside, the house was dim. One light on in the living room.
And there she was.
Mei-Ling Zhao.
Late 30s. Silk blouse. Dark trousers. Hair cut in a sharp bob that didn’t move. She was sitting on a white leather sofa, legs crossed, reading a tablet. She didn’t look like triad royalty. She looked like a CEO working late.
"Biometric lock on the patio door," Nia warned. "I can’t touch it without tripping a tamper alert."
"I don’t need you to," I murmured.
I stepped out of the shadows and raised my hand.
