[Jake’s POV]
The air inside the house was cold.
AC. It hit my skin the second the glass door hissed open and raised goosebumps under my suit. The living room smelled faintly of jasmine and clean wood. Minimalist. White leather. Dark wood floors. Nothing out of place.
Mei-Ling Zhao stood two feet away from me.
The silver-plated revolver was still in her hand. It wasn’t shaking. Her arm was steady. Her eyes were locked on my chest, then flicked up to my face.
Outside, the sound of tires on asphalt. Then metal on metal. A crash. Distant, but it echoed up through the hills.
Her head didn’t turn.
"The perimeter alarms didn’t sound," she said. Her voice was muffled through the glass a second ago, but now it was clear. Perfect English. No accent. Flat. Controlled. "My guards haven’t reported a breach. Who are you?"
"My name is Noah Reed," I said. Hands stayed at my sides. Visible. "I represent the Golden Koi. I’m here to offer you a solution to a problem that is currently driving up the mountain road."
Her eyes narrowed a fraction. The revolver didn’t move.
"The Golden Koi," she repeated. "Madam Bai’s new Head of Security. The ghost who burned the Black Lotus warehouses."
"Word travels fast," I said.
"I manage a multi-billion-dollar real estate portfolio, Mr. Reed," she said. "It is my business to know when the landscape of the city changes."
She took one step forward. The glass door was still open behind me. Cold air was mixing with the AC.
"You are trespassing on private property," she said. "Give me one reason why I shouldn’t press the panic button and have my security detail shoot you where you stand."
Behind her, through the floor-to-ceiling windows, I could see the driveway. Dark. Empty for now. But the sound of shouting was starting.
"Because your husband’s syndicate is collapsing," I said. My voice stayed even. "Superintendent Cho raided his primary export hub last night. He lost two million in inventory and a dozen men. He’s going to need cash to rebuild his routes and pay off the police, and he’s going to look to your real estate holdings to get it."
Mei-Ling’s expression didn’t change. Not at first.
But her fingers tightened around the revolver. Just a fraction. The knuckles went white.
"My husband’s illicit operations are his own concern," she replied. Her tone was colder now. "I manage the legitimate assets. The Crimson Triad’s real estate holdings are insulated from his street-level failures."
"They were insulated," I corrected.
I took half a step back. Not threatening. Giving her room.
"But Zhao is desperate," I continued. "He can’t go to the Four Dragons for a loan, and he can’t rebuild his routes without capital. He’s coming here tonight, Mei-Ling. He’s going to demand that you liquidate the real estate portfolio to fund his war."
The name made her blink. Once.
She stared at me. The corporate mask was still there, but there was a crack in it now. She knew her husband. She knew exactly how he reacted when he was cornered.
"If he tries to liquidate the assets, the gaming commission and the municipal tax boards will freeze the accounts," she said. Her voice was tight. "It will destroy five years of careful structuring. I won’t let him do it."
"You won’t have a choice," I said. "He’s the head of the syndicate. On paper, he owns the holding companies. If you refuse him, he’ll simply remove you from the board. Or he’ll have his street soldiers remove you permanently."
