Chapter 239: The Imperial Shadow

[Jake’s POV]

The drive back to the Outer Harbour was tense.

Rain was coming down in thin sheets. It hit the windshield and the wipers dragged it away in long, squeaking arcs. The sky was the color of wet concrete. Ethan kept both hands on the wheel at ten and two. He didn’t talk. The radio was off. The only sounds were the engine, the tires hissing on damp asphalt, and the occasional crackle of static from my earpiece.

I sat in the back. Cold air from the vents on my neck. My phone screen was bright in the dim van. On it were the structural schematics of the Golden Koi mahjong parlor. Blue lines, red circles. I was zooming in with my thumb, marking entry points. Front doors. Rear loading dock. Fire escape on the east wall. The ventilation shaft on the roof that was just wide enough for a man. I could taste copper in my mouth from not drinking water all day.

My earpiece crackled. Sharp. It made Ethan’s shoulders jerk.

"Noah, we have a situation," Nia’s voice came through. It cut through the quiet. Sharp, urgent, and a little breathless like she’d been running. "The digital breadcrumbs we left in the municipal servers. Someone took the bait."

"The Imperial Shadows," I murmured. I kept my voice low so Ethan wouldn’t jerk the wheel. The words felt heavy. Cold.

"Yes, but they’re moving faster than I anticipated," Nia explained. I could hear her typing. Fast, frantic clicks. "The operative didn’t just trace the anomaly. They bypassed my secondary firewalls in under four minutes. Four minutes, Noah. They’re running a localized trace right now to find the physical relay station I used to bounce the signal."

My jaw tightened.

"Where is the relay?" I asked.

"It’s an old, abandoned telecom switching building on the edge of the Outer Harbour," Nia said. "About six blocks from your current position. Brick. No windows. Smells like mold and rust in there. The operative is pinging the hardware right now. If they physically access that server, they might be able to pull the MAC addresses of our encrypted laptops. That would compromise all of our comms. Everything."

"Can you wipe it remotely?"

"I’m trying," Nia said. I heard her curse under her breath. "But they’ve initiated a localized signal jammer from inside the building. The signal is fuzzing out. I’m locked out of the physical hardware. I can’t reach it. You have to go there and manually destroy the hard drive before they extract the data."

I looked at the GPS map on the dashboard. A red pin six blocks north. Industrial zone. Dead buildings and chain-link fences.

"Ethan, take the next left," I said. My voice was calm. "Drop me at the corner of Rua do Almirante Sergio and head back to the parlor. Start boarding up the ground floor windows and moving the non-essential staff out of the building."

Ethan glanced at me in the rearview mirror. His eyes were tight. "Where are you going? We have an assault coming in less than eight hours. We need every man."

"I have to clean up a loose end," I said. "I’ll be back before the sun goes down."
