Chapter 240: The Intercept

[Jake’s POV]

The flashbang detonated with a blinding, white-hot burst of light and a deafening crack.

The sound hit me first. A spike that drove straight through my skull and vibrated in my molars. Then the light. Even with my eyes squeezed shut and my head turned, it burned red through my eyelids. My ears rang, high and thin, like a needle dragged across glass.

I didn’t lose my footing. Vanguard training. Eyes closed, head turned, mouth open to equalize pressure. The concussive wave rattled my teeth and pushed air out of my lungs, but I stepped forward anyway. Blind.

I swept my left arm out in a wide arc, looking for the charge. The air displaced a half-second before contact. A heavy combat boot aimed at my ribs. The impact was sharp, precise. It caught me just under the vest and knocked the breath out of me anyway. Pain flared bright across my side.

I absorbed it, pivoted on my heel, and grabbed the operative’s ankle. The boot was slick, tactical rubber. I twisted, using their momentum, trying to dump them on the concrete.

The operative twisted in mid-air. I felt the tendons shift, the balance correct itself. They broke my grip with a sharp jerk and landed lightly a few yards away. No sound. Like they’d practiced falling on concrete a thousand times.

My vision began to clear. White spots fractured and shrank, bleeding back into the gloom of the server room. The ozone smell was stronger now. Burned electronics and dust.

The Imperial Shadow stood in a low, balanced fighting stance ten feet away.

It was a woman. I could tell by the frame. Lean, compact. Her face was concealed by a black tactical mask and goggles. No skin showing. Just matte black fabric and the curve of the lenses catching the faint blue glow from the server in the corner.

She held a curved karambit knife in a reverse grip. The blade was matte-black. Non-reflective. It didn’t catch the light. It ate it.

She didn’t say a word. No posturing. No threat. She just lunged.

She closed the distance with terrifying speed. Three steps and she was inside my reach. The karambit came in a tight, horizontal arc aimed at my throat. I could hear the air part.

I leaned back. The blade whistled past my chin close enough that I felt the displacement on my skin. Cold. I countered on instinct. A straight right punch driving for her sternum. She deflected it with her free hand, palm slapping my wrist aside, and stepped inside my guard.

The pommel of her knife came up toward my temple. Fast. I blocked with my forearm. The impact jarred up to my shoulder and numbed my fingers for a second. A dull, deep ache.

She was good. Really good. Close-quarters combat built for speed and misdirection. No wasted motion. No telegraphing. Every strike flowed into the next.

I didn’t draw my gun. Firing a shot in this room would be loud. It would escalate. And I needed to send a specific message to the Empress. Bodies were evidence. A beating was a message.

I shifted my weight. Dropped the defensive posture.

She slashed again. Same line. Throat. I stepped into it instead of away. That surprised her. I felt it in the hesitation of her wrist.

I trapped her knife arm against my chest. The blade scored a shallow line across the fabric of my jacket, but didn’t bite skin. I ignored it. The heat of it. And drove my knee up hard into her abdomen.

She grunted. Air left her lungs in a rush. But she didn’t fold. She tried to sweep my legs, low and fast. I’d seen it. I shifted my center of gravity, hooked my leg behind hers, and drove my shoulder into her chest.
