Chapter 151 Another Way to Hunt

Finished

Since they were heading out, Matthew carefully wrapped Zachary in several layers of clothing. He even added a hat and a scarf on top of everything. Zachary’s face was practically covered; only his eyes showed beneath the layers of cloth.

When the therians arrived at the riverbank, Zachary pointed out several spots. They quickly started working in pairs, hacking away at the ice. Once the holes were large enough, they lowered baited fish traps into the water and marked the spots.

The river wasn’t completely frozen yet, so he only instructed them to set the traps along the riverbank. That was also why it didn’t take much effort to break through the ice. A few swipes of their claws or strikes with stones were enough to crack it apart.

Grabbing Zachary’s arm, Matthew pulled him back slightly and said, The ground is slippery. Don’t too close to the edge.”

stand

Zachary had just recovered from being sick, and the weather outside was freezing.

Matthew was worried that he might accidentally fall into the water. Plus, there were shards of ice flying everywhere. It would be quite painful if one of them were to hit him in the face.

In the end, Zachary could only watch from a distance. Craning his neck just to see, he continued instructing the others, pointing out where the remaining traps should be placed.

The scarf was wrapped so tightly around his neck that speaking was difficult. But whenever he tried to tug it down slightly, Matthew would shoot him a sharp look, and he would sheepishly pull it back

up again.

Matthew could get really stubborn about certain things, never taking no for an answer.

It was late afternoon by the time they finished.

The ground outside was different from inside the tribe, where snow was frequently cleared away. Here, it melted slowly. Each step sank deep. With snow clinging to their shoes, their feet grew heavier and heavier until, every so often, they had to pull their feet free and stomp the snow off.

Zachary was exhausted after walking along the river all morning, so he relented and rode on Matthew’s back during their return trip.

Looking out at the snowcovered forest floor and icecrusted branches along the way, he suddenly had an idea.

Stop, Matthew,he called out.

The black panther halted and turned his head.

I’ve thought of another way to hunt.

Hearing that, the other therians also stopped and looked toward him.

Butyou might have to work quite hard.”

A short while later, the quiet forest was filled with rustling and scraping sounds.

The fierce black panthers dug their claws into the ground with relentless force, sending soil flying everywhere as they worked.

It didn’t take long before two large pits, spaced far apart from each other, appeared in the once smooth.

clean field of snow. Standing at the edge, Zachary Sed down and checked the depth. That’s enough.

The black panthers immediately leapt out of the holes and shook the dirt off their bodies.

He couldn’t help feeling impressed. Heavy labor is really best left to these professional panthers, after all. Their huge claws are practically excavator buckets.

Kyle and Ethan, who had gone back to fetch some supplies, also returned around the same time.

Then. Zachary carefully laid the branches Yael and Daniel had gathered over the deep pits.

Seeing Zachary’s fingers turn red from the cold as he bent down to scoop the snow, Matthew frowned and walked over. He pulled Zachary away by the arm and shoved his hands into his pockets. What next?

Cover them with snow. We need to make them look as natural as possible. Zachary hunched his should and tucked his chin into his collar. After staying outside for so long, the cold was starting to seep into his

bones.

They placed some fresh fruit in the center of the traps, then smoothed over their footprints in the snow. With that, the traps were complete.

Daniel scratched his head with a paw. Will that really work?

No idea, but we might as well try. You never know.Ethan shrugged and flicked his tail.

Kyle licked the fur on the back of his paw. Better than sitting around starving.

Zachary couldn’t understand the purring and growling of the black panthers. Climbing onto Matthew’s back, he stuffed his hands into Matthew’s thick fur for warmth. Let’s head back. When we pull the fish traps from the river tomorrow, we’ll come and check these traps too.

Back in the cave, Taylor and Jaden slept soundly until evening.

Taylor yawned, checks rosy from sleep. The sun only just came up, right? But why does it feel like I’ve been asleep forever?

The sun’s in the west. It’s evening now,Jaden replied as he glanced at the sky, confused. They had clearly gone to bed early last night.

Huh?Taylor’s sleepy eyes instantly snapped open. He stared at the sun in disbelief. How did we sleep that long? No wonder I’m starving.

Jaden lifted the lid on the pot. There was some soup inside, along with several roasted sweet potatoes nearby. The two children reheated the food themselves, then crouched at the entrance with their bowls and ate hungrily.

Zachary happened to return at that moment.

Why are you only eating breakfast now?he asked, surprised by the

God in their bowls.

Jaden and I slept in today. The sun was about to set by the time we woke up,Taylor answered.awkwardly, soup stains visible along the corner of his mouth.

You slept until now?Zachary worriedly reached out and touched their foreheads. They were cool to the touch. Good, there’s no fever.

Matthew quietly listened to the conversation. Calmly shaking the snow off his paws, he walked straight into the cave and shifted back into his human form, taking his time getting dressed.

Zachary was chilled to the bone. Hurrying inside, he sat by the fire and warmed himself, stretching out his hands and feet toward the flames. It took a while before the warmth slowly seeped back into him./

The cold season had only just started, so they

till had some meat stored away. Yel and the others also brought over some wild chickens and ducks recently. At the moment, food wasn’t in particularly short supply yet.
