A lynx’s face seemed made for smiling.

With Zachary’s mouth slightly open, his pink tongue swept over Matthew’s chin, leaving behind a warm, damp touch. His small white teeth showed faintly between the fur, pale and almost transparent/under the light.
Something in Matthew’s chest stirred.
He lowered his head beside Zachary’s ear and murmured, “Kiss me.”
Zachary tilted his head.
This was new.
Matthew rarely asked for things so openly. Most of the time, he carried himself with that calm and serious look, as if nothing could shake him.
Lately, though, he had become much more direct.
Zachary suspected it was because he was still in beast form. Matthew probably believed it was fine to say anything now, since Zachary supposedly did not understand.
Zachary did not reject him.
He lifted his face willingly and licked Matthew’s nose first, then his cheek, then the edge of his ear. Finally, he pressed a quick little kiss against Matthew’s lips.
Matthew’s mouth curved.
He kissed Zachary back, firm and satisfied, before placing him on the ground with a completely composed expression. Then he turned around and began carrying the goods he had traded home.
Zachary stood beside the pile, still full of excitement and ready to show off his cooking skills.
Then he lowered his head and stared at his fluffy paws. His enthusiasm collapsed at once.
He thought, Right. I am a lynx right now. No matter how many dishes I dream up, these paws can’t turn them into reality.
For a moment, Zachary genuinely missed having human hands.
Matthew and Jaden were both working, so Zachary felt awkward simply standing there. His beast form was much stronger than his human body, which meant helping should have been the reasonable thing to do.
The lynx walked over to Matthew, lowered his back, and rubbed against Matthew’s leg, clearly telling him to place something on him.
Matthew stroked his ear and gently guided him aside. “Rest for a while.”
Zachary refused to accept defeat.

He went to Jaden and tried again.

Jaden reacted almost the same way. He stroked Zachary’s back with the calm seriousness of a little adult. “Sire, go play for a bit.”
Zachary sighed.
Ever since he had turned into a lynx, this father and son had started treating him more and more like a real
cat.
They either fed him, carried him, rubbed him, or told him to play by himself.
In the end, the lynx shook his head and accepted a different role instead.
Since Matthew and Jaden always seemed happier just from looking at him, he might as well stay nearby and provide emotional support.
There were many things to carry, and the meat for the trade still had to be delivered. So, Matthew asked Zachary to stay in the center of the tribe for a little while. After he and Jaden finished putting everything away, they would take him for a walk.
Zachary had been trapped in the cave for two snowy days.
Matthew had promised to bring him out once the weather cleared.
Today was exactly right for it.
Sub–therians could not handle the cold well. Once the trade ended, the people gathered in the center of the tribe gradually left.
Quincy and Elias rubbed their hands together against the chill. “Zachary, we’re going back first.”
“Meow!” Zachary raised one paw and waved at them.
After Matthew and Jaden returned to the cave, Zachary hopped onto a large rock nearby.
He lay down lazily with his chin resting on his front paws, waiting for them to come back.
The sunlight felt warm on his fur.
Zachary yawned, ready to drift off, when a shadow suddenly fell across him.
He quickly opened his eyes.
Once Zachary recognized Wesley, he did not even bother to move. He only let out a flat, bored “Awoo,” clearly telling him to get out of the way and stop blocking his sunlight.
Wesley was also a lynx sub–therian, so he naturally understood Zachary’s meaning.
Instead of stepping aside, he moved closer and said, “You can lie in the sun whenever you want. Missing a little bit now won’t hurt you
Zachary was momentarily surprised to be understood so quickly. Then he recalled who Wesley was. Naturally, he realized this person could understand.

Zachary lifted his head slightly. “What do you want?”
Wesley looked relaxed. “Can I not talk to you? We are family, aren’t we?”

“Are you here because you’re bored?” Zachary had no idea what Wesley planned to do, though he was sure it would not be anything pleasant.
Wesley seemed to have a talent for appearing exactly when he was least wanted.
He did not get angry. Instead, he smiled gently, looking friendly enough that anyone passing by might think he had come with good intentions.
Zachary’s fur nearly stood up from that smile.
He closed his eyes again and thought, If I don’t look at him, maybe he will go away.
The number of people in the center of the tribe grew smaller.
After a while, Wesley’s voice sounded again.
“You really are different now.
“I wonder which version is fake. The old you, or the one everyone sees now? Either way, you have fooled them well.”
Since Wesley could understand him clearly, Zachary no longer needed to soften anything.
“There is definitely something wrong with your head.
“You keep coming over and jumping around in front of me. Are you that lonely because no one cares about you?
“Or are you trying this hard because you want me to notice you?
“Can you not survive without me?”
Wesley’s expression twisted with disgust. “Survive without you? Keep dreaming.”
“Then why are you standing here?” Zachary had already lost interest in dealing with him. His gaze shifted toward the cubs playing in the snow not far away.
Wesley crossed his arms and followed his gaze. A cold laugh left him.
“So you like cubs now? Strange. You were never that kind to Jaden before.
“You used to punish and scold your own cub whenever you felt like it. Now, you act as if you care about other people’s children. You really know how to pretend.
Zachary sat up at once. “Wesley, are you f*cking sick? You are so annoying. You’re like grunt–beast sh*t, stinking up the place and disgusting everyone around you.”
