The cow looked thoroughly unimpressed: She snorted through her nostrils and huffed twice, but she didn’t lift a single hoof. When Zachary approached, she merely flicked her tail and smacked him twice.
Compared to before, though, this was already remarkably friendly treatment. Zachary was more than pleased. After crouching down, he began milking her with extreme care, afraid that if he used even a little too much force, he would offend this “lady” and end up getting beaten up right there in the cowshed.
He brewed a huge pot of brown sugar boba. It was sweet without being overpowering, rich with milk flavor, and the tapioca pearls were soft, chewy, and delightfully springy. The more he chewed, the smoother they seemed to become.
Since it was summer, chilled drinks tasted even better, so he poured the boba into clay jars and set them in cold water to cool.
Since Quincy’s house was nearby, Zachary planned to deliver a jar there first. When he arrived, he discovered that Elias and Ian were there as well.
Yael was lounging lazily in a hammock beneath a tree with one leg crossed over the other. Ian sat in his arms as they swayed back and forth together. The cub giggled nonstop while the two of them babbled away in their own incomprehensible language as if they were having a serious conversation.
The moment Yael spotted Zachary, he shot upright and immediately locked onto the clay jar. “Zachary, welcome!”
Quincy and Elias looked up as well. “We were just saying we’d visit you in a bit.”
Smiling, Zachary handed over the jar. “I made something to drink. Thought I’d bring some over for you to try.”
Yael gulped down the first mouthful too quickly and swallowed everything whole. On the second sip, he finally bit into a tapioca pearl.
He chewed twice.
Then blinked.
Then chewed again.
“Hmm? Hmm! Hmm…”
Lowering his head to inspect the jar, he said, “These little things are pretty slippery. Nice and sweet, too.”
Ian was dying to try some. He stretched his body as far as he could, trying to grab the bowl. After being firmly denied, he puffed out his cheeks and pouted pitifully, hoping to win some sympathy from his sire.
Unfortunately, Elias was busy enjoying the boba himself. Seeing that his sire wasn’t paying any attention to him, lan slumped against Yael’s chest, his little face puffed up with indignation.
Since he’d benefited from Zachary’s cooking, Yael naturally took on the responsibility of delivery work without complaint. Carrying a basket full of boba, he diligently transformed himself into the tribe’s

Bruce was busy tinkering with medicine when Yael arrived. The moment he heard the food had come from Zachary, he perked up instantly. After seeing Yael, he enthusiastically invited him to sample a new medicinal soup he’d developed for cooling the body and relieving summer heat.
Yael wanted to run. Unfortunately, Bruce gaze was far too sincere. In the end, he forced himself to drink an entire bowl before making up an excuse and fleeing at top speed.
Meanwhile, Zachary went with Quincy and Elias to the center of the tribe. The ground was covered in golden rice stalks, and the sight instantly reminded him of the old threshing grounds back in his village.
The evening breeze carried the warm scent of grain dried beneath the sun, mixed with the fragrance of grass and fresh earth. Cubs chased one another across the open space while the adults worked, chatted, and laughed together.
Taylor and Jaden came running toward them, their shadows stretched long behind them by the setting
sun.
Ian adored both of his older brothers. He immediately squealed and reached out to them. But when Taylor and Jaden both opened their arms at the same time, the cub hesitated. His large, round eyes darted from one to the other, unable to decide whose embrace he should choose first.
Bored out of his mind at home, Yael had come running back after finishing his deliveries to cling to his mate. It didn’t take long for him to blend seamlessly into the tribe’s cub population and convince a group of little black panthers to take turns pulling him around on a handcart.

Everything was improving.
Everything felt steady.
The tribe rose with the sun and rested when it set, content with what they had.
Kyle hadn’t seen either his mate or his cub for most of the day and missed them terribly. He secretly stole two kisses from Elias before scooping Ian into his arms, lifting him high into the air and gently rocking him back and forth. His eyes were full of a father’s boundless affection.
Matthew tossed the supplies he’d brought back onto Jaden’s little cart, then took Zachary’s hand and leisurely started walking home with him.
Meanwhile, Yael finally managed to act like a proper father for once. Grabbing Taylor beneath the arms, he plopped him onto a cart and immediately started pulling him forward at a run.
Taylor burst into laughter. “Faster!”
After they got home, Quincy carried out the boba and said with a smile, “Zachary made this.”
“Whoa!”

Taylor immediately ran off to wash his hands.
Sitting nearby, Yael spoke with a perfectly straight face. “I didn’t even drink any first. I’ve been waiting for you to get back.”
Taylor looked skeptical. “Really?”
“You don’t trust me?” Yael clutched his chest and pretended to look heartbroken. “I’m wounded.”
Taylor fell for it immediately. After pouring a bowl for his sire, he even took the initiative to pour one for
Yael as well.
Yael winked at Quincy. Quincy didn’t expose his mate’s lie. Instead, he watched the father and son with amusement dancing in his eyes.
If the “battle” between Yael and Taylor happened out in the open, the competition at Zachary’s house was much more subtle.
Matthew brought Jaden down the river again for a bath, and Zachary happened to catch Matthew repeatedly throwing a stick into the distance and making the child run back and forth to retrieve it.
Zachary was horrified.
