Matthew opened his mouth, and his voice was clearly trembling. His steps were heavy and rushed. “Alpha.”

Sean stared at Matthew in disbelief. His deep golden eyes widened in shock. He opened his mouth. “Matthew?”

Matthew’s throat tightened. “Alpha.”

The next second, Sean spun around and shouted into the cave. “Lanny! Come here. Lanny, come here!”

Then he stepped forward and pulled Matthew into a tight hug, His grip was strong, and his rough palms kept patting Matthew’s back.

Matthew felt his chest vibrating. “Alpha…”

Sean said, “What’s wrong?”

Matthew replied, “Tight.”

“Oh, oh.” Sean let out a bright laugh. “It’s been too long, haha…”

When Lanny came out, it all felt like a dream. He stood frozen in place, almost like his reaction was a beat too slow.

Matthew’s gaze locked in immediately. In that moment, a sharp, hard–to–explain ache spread through his chest. His voice broke. “Sire.”

Lanny stared at him blankly. “Matthew…”

Matthew said, “Sire, it’s me.”

Lanny kept repeating himself, almost incoherent. “I’m sorry. I’m sorry…”

Jaden ran straight toward Zachary and pulled him into a tight hug. The usually tough cub finally had red

eyes.

Zachary’s voice trembled. “It’s okay. It’s okay now. We’re here to take you home.”

Taylor was standing nearby, crying hard and hiccupping. Zachary pulled him into his arms, too.

The cub buried his face in Jaden’s shoulder and finally broke down. “Jaden… you scared me to death… Jaden, why didn’t you talk?”

Jaden opened his mouth and let out a rough sound.

Zachary immediately tensed up. “What’s wrong?”

Sean said, “Probably just got some water down his throat.”

“Have Mr. Bruce check him when we get back.” Zachary looked up and realized it was. Sean.

He hesitated for a second, thinking about whether he should say “Alpha,” when Sean suddenly blurted out, “You’re that little funny from the snowfield!”

Zachary froze. “Huh?”

Matthew couldn’t help but speak up. “Alpha. His name is Zachary. He’s my mate.”

“Hey!” Sean got instantly excited. “I knew it. Something was off about you. Turns out you’ve been thinking about him all along. Those blue eyes. He and the cub look exactly the same. I was ready to take him home back then…”

Now that he was suddenly facing Matthew’s parents, Zachary got a little tense. He didn’t even know what to

say.

Matthew reached out and helped his mate up. His voice was gentle: “This is my Alpha and Sire.”

Zachary followed along. “Alpha. Sire.”

Sean grinned. “Yeah!”

Lanny nodded, his eyes full of warmth.

It had been a long time since they’d last seen each other. A lot of the familiar faces felt strangely unfamiliar now, but after a few exchanges, old memories came rushing back.

Besides, Yael and the others had grown up with Matthew. They’d spent years tagging along to Sean’s field lessons, and Donald had been hunting alongside Sean ever since he came of age.

Matthew crouched in front of Jaden. “Are you hurt anywhere?”

Jaden shook his head, then reached up and touched his throat.

Bruce cupped his face. “Alright, open wide. Try making a sound.”

“Ahhh…”

After checking him over, Bruce ruffled his hair and smiled. “You’re fine. Just take some medicine when we get back. Your throat should be back to normal in a few days.”

Taylor finally let out a breath of relief. The tension melted from his little face as he wrapped his arms around Jaden’s arm. “Good thing you’re okay. Don’t ever do that again, alright? Because I’ll really get mad. I can protect you too.”

Jaden stared at the damp little curls plastered to Taylor’s forehead with sweat and nodded seriously. He parted his lips, his voice coming out rough and raspy. “I’m sorry.”

Taylor’s tone softened immediately. “It’s okay. I forgive you. I was just really scared. Little Baldy and I were so worried about you. We couldn’t even eat properly. Even snacks didn’t taste good anymore…”

Jaden simply stood there and listened as Taylor rambled on and on. Little Baldy was no different. The two of them bounced off each other like a comedy duo, filling him in on everything that had happened over the past few days.

Sean and Lanny looked at Taylor and Little Baldy, who were standing beside Jaden. Before either of them could say anything, Taylor eagerly introduced himself. “Hi! I’m Yael and Quincy’s cub. My name’s Taylor.”

The cub flashed a sweet smile, revealing two tiny pointed canines. “And this is Little Baldy. He’s from the vulture tribe, and he’s mine and Jaden’s best friend.”

The little sweetheart was so adorable that everyone burst out laughing. The atmosphere instantly became much lighter.

There was a lot of stuff inside the cave, but the only things worth taking were the beast hides, bedding, clothes, and a few other necessities.

Zachary moved over to help pack, but the moment he got close, Matthew caught his hand and guided him toward a stool. “You sit here. We’ll be done in no time.”

Then Matthew turned around to get him some water. Spotting a jar of honey on the stone slab, he scooped a generous spoonful into the bowl, stirred it, then set it on the table in front of Zachary. “Drink a little more. It’s sweet.”

Zachary smiled at him. “Okay.”

Sean nudged Lanny with his elbow and lifted a brow. “See? He’s always been crazy about Zachary. Ever since he was little. I never got that kind of treatment. He wouldn’t even let me have any eggs.”

“You’re still holding a grudge over that?” Lanny asked with a laugh, his eyes crinkling at the corners. “I’ll go get you some water.”

“Oh, no, no.” Sean immediately got to his feet, looking ridiculously pleased. “I’m the one getting water for you.”
