Matthew’s gentle attentiveness toward him caused a warm, softened feeling to rise in Zachary’s chest.
By the time Jaden arrived at Quincy’s place, Yael was stretched out on a large boulder outside the cave entrance, dramatically waving a hand as if trying to cool himself back to life. Nearby, Taylor crouched over a basin, rinsing his hair, thick white foam covering his head.
Quincy assumed Jaden had come to play with Taylor and smiled lightly. “Taylor will be finished soon.”
“Soon!” Taylor glanced up, wiped the water from his face, then immediately dipped his head back into the basin again.
Jaden explained, “My sire asked me to bring you all out to catch
Taylor blinked in confusion. “Crawfish?”
Yael pushed himself upright on the rock. “What’s that?”
crawfish.”
Jaden wasn’t entirely certain either, so he simply replied, “Something tasty.”
Without a second of hesitation, Yael dropped down. “Then we’re going.”
Jaden added quickly, “Sire also said we should bring as many people as we can.”
That instantly flipped Yael into commander mode. “Jaden, go fetch Kyle and Ethan.
“Taylor, you get Daniel and his group.
“I’ll track down Donald.
“And bring all your elders too!”
Anyone listening would’ve thought a war was about to break out.
Before long, Zachary heard the thunder of rushing footsteps outside the cave. When he stepped out to look, he froze. Yael and the others were approaching with baskets, knives, and beast–hide bags strapped across their backs. Instead of looking like people going fishing, they looked like an army preparing to
arnly eradicate crawfish entirely.
Even the shaman arrived, already dressed in sturdier clothing as if preparing for battle.
“Zachary, are we heading out now? Do we need to bring anything else?
“If we’re short–handed, we can call more people!”
The excitement was almost excessive.
On the way, Zachary’s injured foot still ached, but he insisted on walking rather than letting Matthew carry him. Too many people were watching, and with cubs around, it would have been too embarrassing.
Matthew simply slowed his pace and stayed beside him.

When they reached the river, the group quickly divided into teams.
Matthew refused to let Zachary enter the water, so Zachary remained on the bank, coordinating everyone while Matthew demonstrated first.
Perhaps because this world had few natural predators—and because therians rarely ate them–the crawfish population was enormous and grew to impressive sizes.
Grass in the shallow water parted easily, revealing crawfish scattered everywhere. One quick reach was enough to snatch one. A single sweep of the basket lifted several at once.
Most therians also had toughened hands, so they weren’t worried about being pinched. They caught them effortlessly, as though it were second nature.
Zachary worried the cubs and sub–therians might get injured, so he had them wear waterproof cowhide boots and crafted simple wooden tongs for them. The tools worked like oversized chopsticks joined at the top, making them easy to use.
With those improvements, even competition broke out among them. Before long, they had gathered an enormous catch.
From the riverbank, Zachary watched happily as basket after basket was covered with branches to keep the crawfish from escaping.
Then thunder rolled overhead, and dark clouds began to gather.
Reluctantly, everyone climbed out of the water, hauling their heavy catch back with them. It was truly a bountiful harvest.
Because the rain had started, they headed straight to the tribe’s central cave. It was spacious enough to hold multiple large pots, and the storage area nearby provided everything they needed.
Once the fires were lit, Zachary and Yael’s group began preparing side dishes and rolling pasta that would later soak up the sauce. Everyone else focused on cleaning the crawfish.
Outside the cave entrance, the therians squatted in the rain, using the runoff to scrub the crawfish clean. They discarded the innards into patches of twistgrass, then rinsed the shells repeatedly with fresh water.
Even with rain splashing into their faces, no one seemed to care. All their attention was fixed on the coming feast.
Taylor, Jaden, and the other cubs weren’t idle either. They gathered firewood, tended the flames, and even took initiative to prepare skewers for barbecue.
When the chief heard what was happening, he hurried over through the rain, rolled up his sleeves, and joined Sean and the others in peeling potatoes.
Large pots were set over the flames. Once the oil reached temperature, entire basins of crawfish were poured in. Almost instantly, their dull shells transformed into a bright, vivid red, releasing a rich. mouthwatering aroma that filled the cave.
Everyone leaned in without even realizing it.

Garlic, ginger, onions, peppercorns, and dried chilies all sizzled in hot oil. The fried crawfish were returned to the wok, coated thoroughly, and then mixed with the side ingredients to simmer. The fragrance was overwhelming.
The cubs sat neatly in a row nearby, all swallowing hard in unison.
Batches came off the fire one after another–spicy, mild, garlic–flavored, savory–each variety laid out in long rows. The cooked pasta was tossed in, absorbing the thick red sauce.
Barbecue skewers piled up like small hills–beef ribs, grilled fish, chicken wings, dried bean curd, slices, even flatbread.

Yael couldn’t resist and grabbed one immediately, popping it into his mouth. He had intended only to suck off the sauce, but ended up crunching through the entire thing, shell included.
When Taylor tried to imitate him, Zachary quickly stopped him, took one, and peeled it clean in a practiced motion. “Eat it like this.”
