Chapter 547 Investigating the Impostor

She was fuming inside, ready to scream, but with that nosy housekeeper still hovering in the hallway, she had no choice but to turn around and head back to her room like nothing had happened.
Eugene carried Robert out of the house and into the car. He settled him in the back seat, slid behind the wheel, started the engine, and pulled away fast.
Once they’d cleared the gates of Riverville Prime Residence, Eugene gradually slowed down.
Robert, who’d been lying there looking miserable, sat up. He rubbed at the red marks on his skin with mild annoyance–the whole allergic reaction had been staged.
“You’re not gonna say thank you?”
Robert checked himself out in the rearview mirror, making sure no traces of the fake rash were left, and said flatly.
Eugene let out a low laugh. “Yeah. Thanks. You want an allowance bump? Name your number.
“Tch. Look at you, throwing money around. How about just giving me your credit card info?” Robert leaned forward, shameless. “Once Mom actually marries you, you’ll be my dad, I’ll be your kid, and your money’s basically my money anyway. Right?”
Listening to Robert’s logic, Eugene smiled faintly. “Seriously, kid. I owe you. Another few seconds in there and I would’ve lost it. Would’ve taken care of her myself right then and there.”
Hearing the sincerity in Eugene’s voice, Robert looked satisfied. “That’s more like it. “Thank you‘ actually means something. Money’s whatever.”
Eugene’s expression darkened.
Who was this woman pretending to be Chloe? That was what he needed to know most.
He’d thought about just grabbing her, squeezing the truth out of her by force.
But he was worried about whoever was pulling the strings behind her. If the fake didn’t know everything, pushing too hard could tip them off.
What mattered now was buying time and finding Chloe.
Bruce was already working it. Eugene had resources everywhere, but to avoid showing his hand–to keep the other side from realizing they knew–he’d been holding back.
Days of searching had turned up nothing.
The only thing they’d confirmed was that Chloe had gone to the mall before the accident. The purchases
were hers.

Robert watched him for a long moment. Then, quietly, he spoke up, I went through every system I could get into. Took some work, but I found something”
Eugene hit the brakes. The car screeched to a halt.

Fugene turned to him, eyes sharp. “What did you find?”
Robert glanced at Eugene’s tense face, then looked out the window. They’d stopped near a food truck still open this late, a few customers eating at the picnic tables nearby.
Playing along with your act made me hungry. I want food. I’ll tell you after I eat.
Yugene followed his gaze to the food truck. He understood. Him, looking like this, grabbing food from a truck at this hour?
