Bruce texted back. They’d picked up a few leads on the woman playing pretend–nothing confirmed yet, but they were working on it. He was already on–site and would forward the full report as soon as anything solid came through.
Eugene read the message, and for the first time in days, something like a smile tugged at the corner of his mouth. A lead was a lead.
“Here you go! That’s a lot of food, so throwing in a free soda,” the guy at the food truck said cheerfully, handing over the bag.
Eugene almost said no–he didn’t really do soda–but the guy had already packed it all together. Free was free. He took it.
“Hey… um, can I get your Instagram?” A girl, pushed forward by her friends, stepped up bravely, phone already out.
Eugene looked at her. Was she even eighteen? Out this late, and from the looks of the table in the corner, her and her friends weren’t drinking soda.

“My Instagram’s for my wife. And my kid wouldn’t approve either.” He picked up the bag and walked back to the car without looking back.
Inside, Robert had his face pressed against the window, watching the whole thing. He was barely holding it together.
Eugene slid back in with the food. Didn’t linger. Even with the girls‘ eyes still glued to him, he didn’t spare them another glance.
“Not bad, old man. Still got it. Even teenagers can’t look away.” Robert leaned back, grinning, and gave a lazy thumbs–up. “Respect.”
Eugene’s face stayed neutral. He just ignored him, started the engine, and pulled away.
Behind them, the group of girls watched the car disappear. The one who’d asked for his Instagram was still frozen in place.
“So? Did you get it?”
“Yeah, what’s his handle?”
“Is it something really cool?”
They all fired questions at once. The girl just stood there, staring at the empty street. Finally, she turned

back. “He’s… he’s married. And his kid’s already that old.”
“No way.
“You’re kidding
That one sentence killed every bit of hopeful excitement. A guy that hot, already taken, and with a kid that
age.
